Against the backdrop of a fiercely oppressive summer heat and a true story of 16th Century Strasbourg, Millwood Hargrave tells the story of Lisbet, a young woman whose marriage is increasingly loveless and who, on her thirteenth pregnancy, is haunted by the twelve babies she lost before term. The pressure is on in every sense, and made worse by a strict and punitive religious body who rules the city and its environs with a rod of iron. As women in the city buckle under the pressure of religious conformity and having to feed their families during a time of crop failures, a trance like dancing mania breaks out, leading to claims of witchery and further crack downs by the church. With the arrival of Lisbet's sister in law, returned from years of penance for an unknown crime, everything Lisbet thought she knew about life begins to unravel and she embarks on a journey of self discovery which is both welcome and terrifying.
