i need to stop reading middle grade books expecting the second coming of christ. because really all middle grade books i find just… fine. they are fine. they are certainly books i read. but nothing ever ends up standing out as remarkable to me (TO ME!!!!)
like. this was cliche central. so so so many cliches if i listed them all it would probably be half the length of this book (because it is told in verse). also another sign i need to stop reading poetry because clearly it’s not my thing. sigh.
the bullying in this book was cartoonishly crazy. like i get for a kid book sometimes shit has to be emphasised by a million times to drive the point home to the little coco-melon’d out kids but…. oh my god was that heavy handed. and a lot of it felt unrealistic at times, especially regarding the teachers. yeah ok this kid might be anywhere from slightly overweight to morbidly obese but idk the fact all adults baring Two in this kid’s life enabled and even engaged in the fat shaming of this kid???? it kept throwing me out of the story. like i am a plus sized diva yes fatphobia does infact exist but not to that level omg 😭 and at the very least other adults would tell other children to shut the fuck up, or there would be a handful of asshole adults, but not EVERYONE?????? save my girl ellie she is being psychologically tortured fr. if i was her i’d just eat more fuck them haters /lhj
i feel like this is most prevalent with the mum. Holy Shit. i defo can’t relate because my mum is also plus sized, but HUH????? what the fuck is happening here. the mum is so cartoonishly “evil” it’s almost beyond a cartoon. it’s a caricature. it was so wild and almost at times laughable because seriously Huhhhh
i do think this would be a decent book for tweens. good? Ehhhhh don’t push ur luck. i think it was perfectly ok. middle ground. nothing more nothing less. ok maybe a smidge less. but a SMIDGE

Read it in one night. Hit a little too close to home. So glad things got better, if not good, for our lovable main character.
