Starfish

4.5 AVERAGE

Sweet, simple, and incredibly emotional. I think a lot of people would relate to, or minimally empathize with, Ellie’s story.

I think Starfish might be targeted to a younger audience, but I think there are many adults who need a reminder that it’s okay to exist in this world, no matter how much you weigh.

Adorable and very moving
Perk of your sister being a social worker with kids

Stop what you are doing and read this book. Starfish hurt as much as it healed. It reminded me how much I wish 30-year-old Katey could protect 11-year-old Katey. Growing up as a fat girl was incredibly traumatic and we keep discovering more about that lasting trauma. Ellie's story is with reading.

Read this book anywhere and take up as much space as possible.

4.5⭐️. I am always looking for new and topical books for my classroom. Bullying has become even more of an issue over the years and for some reason, nothing seems as acceptable as fat shaming. As someone who has struggled with her weight and had both peers and parents who gave me a difficult time because of it (though not to the same degree as the main character), I could really relate.

I loved the second half. As Ellie talked with a therapist, she became stronger and advocated for herself in very healthy ways. I think this book was written in an interesting and accessible way. I think it would help some kids become more confident, and maybe others more compassionate.

I am happy to have a copy in my classroom library.

This was my very first verse novel and so enjoyed it. Short but full of so much heart.
