This was a well written book. I think it gets to the heart of capturing what it feels like to be shamed and bullied for the size and shape of one’s body. This book was heart wrenching, not only because Ellie was being bullied at school by her peers, as well as strangers, but she was also being bullied in her own home by some of her family members. Throughout the book, Ellie learns to stand up for herself, speak her truth and face her bullies.
I think this book is an eye-opener to the effects bullying and fat phobia have on their recipients…it offers a realistic perspective of walking in someone else’s shoes.

However, for readers who have been bullied because of their weight or how their body looks, this book may be triggering.

I think this is a great book to bring awareness to others about body image and how our words can be more damaging than we think. I learnt a lot from this book and definitely think it is one that others should read, if only to learn a little more about compassion and empathy.

So good and powerful. This was well written and allowed me to put myself in the shoes of a larger body and empathize. This would be a great book for anyone who experiences bullying or wants to cope with body image issues. Love it

A story written in verse about an overweight girl who is bullied by her peers as well as her own family. Heartbreaking at times while uplifting at others, Ellie is a courageous girl who learns to love herself even when it seems others who are supposed to love you, don’t. Great character development throughout and important life lessons.

This novel written in verse is a page turner! Ellie is a delightful protagonist, and the reader vividly feels all of her joys and frustrations, ups and downs, and brokenness and strength. Fipps did an excellent job of creating a realistic, contemporary tween (that happens to be pleasantly plump) and how she endures a year without her best friend, makes new allies, is relentlessly bullied by peers and family, and ultimately accepts her truth and finds her voice.

I've shared this novel with two of my upper elementary students and they can't put the book down either. I highly recommend this book as an addition to middle-grade classroom libraries.
