What a powerful book! It looks at how well meaning and sometimes not so well meaning words can be incredibly hurtful and can cause lasting damage. A necessary read for all of us, those who struggle with weight and those who don’t. Written in narrative verse form, so it is a quick read.

Middle grade book in verse that deals with bullying. It brought tears to my eyes more than once. People need to be kinder to each other.
I wish I could give Ellie, the protagonist, a big hug.

This book is absolutely beautiful. It’s a middle grade novel, so not a difficult read, but I loved it so much. I couldn’t put it down. I cried actual tears several times.
Starfish is absolutely extraordinary and worth all the accolades it is getting. If you have ever lived in a fat body, this is the book you needed when you were a kid. This is the book you need now. If you have never lived in a fat body, this is the book you need to read. If you are parenting a child who is fat, read this book first and then make sure he or she reads this. If you are parenting a child who is not fat, read this book first and then make sure he or she reads this. If you have ever taught a fat child, buy this book for your classroom, read this first, book talk it, and put it into the hands of as many kids as you can regardless of their body shape.
Impactful
This book is a quick, gut punch to anyone who reads it. El lends perspective to her experiences as a bullied teen who finds her voice and self-acceptance along the way. It hurt to read at times because of the reality that bullies are in everyday life. I hope to one day teach my kids to starfish just like Ellie.

As soon as I read the introduction, I was weeping and had to set the book down for a bit.
This book is important and painful and true and affirming. I wish I had this book when I was a fat girl being made to believe I was less than. What a powerful, powerful book. I wish every human - not just child - could read this.
