I don’t want to rate this book as I never like to rate kids books, and even though it was an important story to tell and was told in a beautiful way, it really fell flat and was frustrating to read. The aspect I struggled with was the main characters age. When reading, I thought she was at least 16 or 17, because she wasn’t in college… but then we find out she is 11? While I do not know what it is like in her shoes, I have a hard time thinking an 11 year old has so much self awareness and clarity of mind to take on such complex relationships in her life in a way that I feel most 20 or 30 year olds can’t do.

I also struggled with the cruelty of the people around her. I know the words said were said to the author, and it was really hard to read. I think the cruelty and bluntness of it was intentional as to jar the reader into understanding what it is like.

Not sure what more to add. Quick read, definatly for kids and has a very important message people should learn from.

Cartoonishly evil at times, but something I could see 11 year old me appreciating as a fat kid! I can’t imagine that at 26 I’m the target audience, though as a fat person who was raised a fat girl in a Weight Watchers mom household filled with diet culture and food talk, I completely relate to much of what was said and experienced in this. The family dynamics are painfully centered around Ellie a bit too much for me—I understand why, as this is a young reader’s introduction to possibly differing perspectives or a way to empathize with someone who has gone through something similar. I appreciated the author’s note at the end about how she experienced many of these things herself as a child!

Heartbreaking quick read about bullying. I really loved this glimpse into the author and her character.
fast-paced

Phew did this book resonate with me. Eli, a self-proclaimed fat girl, deals with meanness from her classmates, her siblings, and worst of all, her own mother. Everyone has something vicious to say about her size and no one wants to accept her as she is. That is, until her work in therapy helps her understand that the problem is not her size, it's how other people treat her because of her size. She learns to stand up for herself without attacking others and even confronts her fatphobic mother with the help of her therapist. Eli learns to starfish, or proudly take up space, and to let go of her Fat Girl Rules. I was so proud of her by the end of the book. This is an emotional but powerful read and I highly recommend it.
