This book is definitely one of my favorite books I read this year. It was so adventurous, fun, and a breath of fresh air. And it was full of imagination, courage, and magic! I loved seeing Rose grow as a character and mend Roar back together. I’m so going to be grabbing book two off the shelf the second I see it!

2.5 I really struggled with this book. I honestly don’t know why, maybe it was the book, maybe it was me but I just never really got into the story. At first it just felt a little too much like Narnia and I just had a hard time picking this book up. Although the ending was really great, I think the grandfather was my favourite character and his explanations for the existence of Roar were really a good closure for this story, I don’t think I will pick the sequel up.
This incorporates elements from The Chronicles of Narnia, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and Coraline. I loved that despite all those elements and nods to brilliant stories, The Land of Roar is also very much its own.
Twins Arthur and Rose are spending time with their Grandad over the summer, when Arthur believes he the shadow of a wizard in the attic. While investigating, he and Rose discover a map of The Land of Roar, a world they created as children. At 11, Rose believes they are too old to play imaginary games, choosing to instead be glued to her cellphone. Arthur misses the closeness the twins once had, turning to their Grandad to reminisce about his childhood. As their Grandad investigates the portal to Roar in an old cot in his attic, he is snatched away. Arthur believes this is all a practical joke, until he enters the cot and is transported to the very real Roar. There, he is reunited with his old friends, told he and Rose were once Masters of Roar, and discovers that their Grandad has been taken by the evil entity Crowky.
This was so much fun to read! I appreciated the theme of retaining the magic of youth, as well as watching the connection between Arthur and Rose reemerge. I also loved learning the family's origins in Mauritius, an island nation east of Madagascar. I appreciated that the diversity was mentioned, but did not usurp the overall plot of the book.
