Despierta. Across the Universe.
Sinopsis:
Girl. Boy. Spaceship. Murder. Deception. Totalitarian political system, manipulation, and art.
I loved this book a very, very great deal.
Like Leviathan Wakes (and it's about the only thing the two books have in common, aside from the whole space thing), Across the Universe is a dual narrative, although here it's two first-person voices. In this case, one POV is Amy: frozen in hibernation, accompanying her parents to a new planet to be amongst its first colonists. (Which may make you ask how she can be a narrator... just trust me on this one.) On the other hand is Elder, awake on the same ship Amy is sleeping on, part of the generation crew tasked with looking after the ship while it travels to the planet - a journey of some 300 years. The story revolves around Amy waking up ahead of time. Accidentally. And she's cranky about it. As you would be. Amy's awakening is a disruption on two significant levels: for Elder personally, because he finally has someone around of the same age but she's like no one else he's met; and for the ship, not least because it is mono-ethnic - an ethnicity that Amy quite clearly does not fit. Both Elder and the ship as a whole struggle to figure out how Amy can fit in. On a ship hurtling through space, with limited resources and no way to leave if you don't like things, fitting in seems of paramount importance. So what does Amy do, what does Elder do, and why is Amy awake now anyway?
Along with a cracking pace and intriguing plot, there are some meaty issues to be dealt with. On the large scale, there's the issue of how a generation ship could be made to work. This is a question that has frequently taxed SF; Elizabeth Bear's Dust/Chill/Grail sequence is one example that goes in completely different directions from Revis. On the face of it life on the Godspeed looks like it works quite well, but very quickly it becomes obvious that perhaps there are cracks that have been papered over. Connected to this is the question of leadership, and what makes a good leader; Elder is learning from Eldest, and his reflections on what works and what does not are by no means trivial. On the more personal scale is how individuals deal with trauma, and expectations, and their own inner demons. Amy's angst over whether to join her parents, and then how to cope with being woken early, is visceral and compelling. Elder's disagreements with Eldest and how discoveries about the ship are in some ways less shattering, but have further-reaching consequences. And then there's Harley, who I wish had had more of a presence in the novel. An artist, impacted by tragedy, and a better friend to both Elder and Amy than either to the other. His perspective, even though we get it solely through Amy and Elder, adds great richness. And poignancy.
Also, there is a love story. But not an easy one.
Plus, that cover! Beautiful!
There is some hand-wavey science-y stuff that doesn't entirely make sense, and for the more technically-minded this may well be enough to throw you out of the story. I am not that person; I love my science but I am willing, for a good cause, to be very forgiving of hand-waving when it's not too obvious (to me!) - and as you can see, this was a very good cause indeed (for me).
This is (of course) the first in a projected trilogy. I hope Revis can maintain the awesomeness.
(To make things even more fun, Beth Revis sounds like a totally awesome person. She was a teacher, who loved teaching! She likes Shakespeare for the dirty jokes and wrote her MA on CS Lewis' Till We Have Faces (oh I must re-read that, I haven't read it in such a long time). She is racing her mother to see which can get to the most (US) states! That says... quite a lot, really.)

Dios como me ha gustado este libro! Me encantó.

This book was really good, totally not what I was expecting at all! If you’re interested in reading this book for the romance then I’m sorry to say you will be disappointed (which is funny because the cover has a boy and girl almost kissing). But if you’re interested in this book for the dystopia, sci-fi, murder mystery in outer space then you’re looking in the right place!
The plot pretty much takes off after Amy is unplugged and she wakes up on the ship 50 years before they are supposed to land on the new planet. From there Elder and Amy try to figure out who wants to murder the people who are cryogenically frozen and why. Along the way they discover that everything on the ship is a lie and that their form of “government” is beyond corrupted and basically it is a Hitler/dictator leadership. So as you can tell things are BAD!
The characters were really great. Elder is kind of in training to become leader of the ship and in that process he has some major development. At first I was annoyed with him because he was just so naïve and believed EVERYTHING Eldest told him. Thankfully he saw the light and learned what a true leader should be, and I actually really loved Elder. Amy is the other main character and I can see why a lot of people don’t like her. But you have to understand she’s a 17 year old girl, almost murdered, and she learns that by the time her parents wake up she might already be dead. Honestly she had the right to panic and cry over this shock. She ended up being very strong and I loved that she wasn’t afraid of talking back to Eldest or anyone for that matter. *I have to say though Harley was my favorite character. I absolutely adored him<3 *
I can also understand why people didn’t like the writing. It was pretty bad, and at times I was a bit confused because everything was a bit unorganized. But while reading it I tried to overlook that because Beth Revis has created a world so incredible, (or should I say ship). The world building was phenomenal, and nothing was left out. She thought of every last detail on the ship (think Zenon from Disney but so much better). She even created a crazy society that even I was kind of scared of. I guess this is why sci-fi novels fascinate me.
What I disliked about the book. Ikind of, no I did predict what was going to happen. I hate myself for it but in a mystery it’s obvious I was trying to figure it out. I just feel the author should have been a bit more discreet with the clues about the villains. For me at least I felt like it was right in your face. From the very beginning I was like “oh, that person did it!” and I was right. (And no I haven’t seen any spoilers but I just literally figured it out right away.) I still kept reading though because there was a lot going on that interested me.
Overall if you want a sci-fi, dystopian, mystery, fantasy novel then definitely pick this up. I am so excited to read the next 2 books, going to order them asap!

I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first time I read this 2 years ago, so my rating is really closer to 3.5 stars. But I still really liked it and I had forgotten a lot of what happened and the little details. I really disliked Elder during this reread, and I think it's just because he is so freaking obsessed with Amy. Like I get it, she's different and beautiful and the only one his age but omg! All he ever thinks about is her lips and her body and how he wants to touch her and kiss her all the damn time. It was just a bit disturbing because this would happen even when Amy was crying and having a breakdown or when she was trying to talk about something really serious. And he had this irrational jealousy that just rubbed me the wrong way; it was like a stupid mentality that he owned her. Ugh. And Eldest. THE WORST. Amy did get on my nerves a tiny bit. But I stepped back and realized that if I was in her shoes I would be freaking out way worse than her throughout her experience on the ship. Anyways, I really liked the sic-fi/dystopia/mystery aspect to this story. I'm so excited to finally read A Million Suns and find out what's next for the people aboard Godspeed!

This isn't so much of a SciFi/Romance YA Novel as it is more a Political/Mystery book. There is a fascinating comparison to what we have gone through in our lifetime and I like how Revis was able to incorporate it into her story. Even though I felt the book was quite predictable, there were a few twists here and there that kept me guessing throughout the book.
Things I would have loved to have read.
-More character depth. Everything was glossed over. We don't delve too far into the heart of the character.
-More scifi. Considering this takes place on a spaceship, there's a level of expectation that you'll be reading a scifi novel.
The book wrapped up nicely, and didn't leave you hanging like some authors do with major cliffhangers. This one allows you to decide if you want to pick up the sequel.
I give this book a generous 3 stars because I have met the author and she's signed my book :)
