I do really enjoy Rober Harris' writing. There are points of "there is absolutely NO way", but the book is enjoyable I didn't care and didn't. The history in this is interesting and even though you know how this story ends, I still felt caught up in the story wondering how it was going to end. I will always wonder what the people were actually thinking what was happening, if there were people who did know what was coming and tried to warn or just took off knowing what was in store.

Being a Classicist, you might think I would have read this a long time ago. It has been on my To-Read list for a long time and I'm definitely glad I got round to reading it. It's not wow-worthy but it does a good job of showing what Pompeii was like in AD 79 in the days before the eruption. I liked the fact they absed it around the job of an aquarius and showed the importance of the acqueducts to the Romans and tied that in with the impending eruption of Vesuvius. Added intrigue is a small hint of romance, corruption, Pliny and a missing person.

I can't really put my finger onto it, but I did not enjoy this book as much as some other Harris-books like the famous Cicero triology. However, it gives you a great impression of what happened when Pompeji went down. I also liked  reading about the roman water system. Harris did great research as always.

much to admire here, particularly the history.  obviously, lots of research went into this.  but there's a rather trite romantic storyline that mars the rest.  i'm not disappointed i spend the time with this.

Maybe not the most interesting story, but I liked it since we just visited Pompeii while on vacation.
