Pompeii

Easy to read. The light writing style makes it seem like a less serious book than it is. I was sucked into the last 100 pages or so when everything resolves for the main characters. His Pliny was great.

This is the second time I've read this book and once more I've enjoyed it greatly. Shockingly, Pompeii is a historical fiction book set in 79 AD Pompeii. We all know what is coming but it doesn't take away from this fast pace, action packed story which follows Attilius, an engineer in charge of the Aqua Augusta which has dried up in the few days before the eruption. Harris paints a vivid picture of Roman life in Neapoli Bay, sprinkling facts about volcanology at the start of each chapter. I'm sure many liberties were taken with historical accuracy, if anything because the main protagonist seems to survive an awful lot of things. Still, I found the book enjoyable, immersive, suspenseful and well paced. A solid 4.5.

Good book, took me a while to get into, but did get into the story! nice to look at a historical event in a fictional sense

Not my favourite Robert Harris book but still a good story on an interesting topic. I found the subplot and characters to be lacking in substance but there was still enough tension to keep the story interesting and moving along.
