An excellent, gripping, account of Mount Vesuvius' eruption that preserved Pompeii. Harris did not shy away from portraying how life really was like in Rome, and it was fairly realistic. I have read this twice now, every time it feels new.

Really disappointed as I’ve read to other Harris books which I really enjoyed but not this one. Following the story of an engineer of the great aqueduct in the comings days before the eruption of Vesuvius. It took 300 pages for it to actually get interesting the plot was oh there’s no water how strange where is the water let’s go to another village and see if they have water no hmmm how strange. Really boring. The ending was the only redeeming feature when the volcano actually erupts
I love volcano's. This book did not disappoint, but since we already know the end ( I mean, we know it erupted and all that jazz), then it was hard as I wanted some people to live.
