This was the first book I read after moving to Knoxville, found on the new book shelves of the library. It helped renew my love of visiting the library on at least a monthly basis, but usually weekly, as for months, I had no disposable income to purchase books with. I loved seeing how the last days of Pompeii and Herculaneum might have played out, what the people were doing that day. It was very well written, and entertaining, as well as imformative. If you like to read historically based fiction, put this on your list.

This book was really hard for me to get into...I enjoy reading about different disasters and thought that it would be easy to read about. But the names and the language was hard for me to wrap my head around. It got better about halfway through the book (though honestly I don't think they said or did some of the things written in their time, like use the "f" word). The last half of the book was constant go-go-go and I enjoyed it.

3.5 STARS, second book of Robert Harris's that I have read. This book was fast paced, it had plot twists, a really really good guy and an evil bad guy. That seems to be the recipe for a decent book. Love a bit of historical fiction and have always been fascinated by Pompeii and the eruption so this ticked those boxes. On the other hand I could have done without the semi tutorial in Roman plumbing and acquaducts. Dont let that put you off though was still enjoyable. I was glued to the last 100 pages, desperate to find out who survived. Again this would make a great action movie

3/5 stars because I actually enjoyed the writing and characters, as well as the plot...

...But sadly I had to DNF it after forcing myself to finally finish this book.

I contemplated giving it a 2 star rating, because it's not my cup of tea and I didn't enjoy it - but I saw that coming since historical novels, etc. have never been something I liked.
I am still thankful for my ex-Latin-teachers who gifted me this, I really appreciate their effort and I genuinely wish I could've enjoyed this more...please give this book a chance because - like I said - the writing is beautiful :)

2.5

Well, this one was weird.
It's not that it was -bad- - I was always fascinated with the history of this city in particular, before and after the eruption, so reading this book and imagining the lives of Roman citizens during the era was good. It's great to notice that the author has done a lot of reading about volcanic eruptions and the structure of the city, in particular that of the water distribution system.

That being said, the story itself was kind of weird. I mean, it's a really strange way to tell that story. Some parts I liked better than the others, but I was mostly interested in the historical and natural processes the city, it's citizens and the volcano went through.
