I think I meant to read Carmilla and accidentally read this instead, and for my mistake I got an unfinished and tedious novella about unrequited incest love.

“If pain can purify the heart, mine will be pure.”
“I am alone—quite alone—in the world.”
finally read my first Mary Shelley and it did not dissapoint. I was intrigued from the very first chapter- even with the premise of it and going into this novella somewhat felt like a guilty pleasure, passionate, classic, romance read. Her words flow smoothly from the pages and though you may not understand some lines- you can feel them. You can relate to her solitude and that feeling of being misunderstood and alone with all your feelings- guilt, sadness, love and pain. I did not go into this book for its negative form of incest but more so for Matilda herself and how she handles being a lonely, sad girl during her time. Finally, a mini classic penguin book I’m willing to keep.
