Pleasantly surprised. Likable characters and a conflict that I can get behind

I don’t fully understand why Penn fell in love with Rhya and vice versa when we saw very little meaningful interaction between the two of them. Soren on the other hand…. I can’t wait to see more of him. A throuple situation would be kind of fun too 😛

This was excellent! The world, the magic, the characters, everything about this story is lush and immersive. It’s a fantasy tale with a very slow-burn romantic subplot, full of tension and banter that keeps you hooked.

We get everything you could want from the first book in a series:
• A fierce, brooding prince who’s deeply protective (major “touch her and die” energy)
• A heroine discovering her hidden magic and learning how to wield it
• Strong found family vibes that add warmth and depth

I’m absolutely obsessed and already counting down to book two!

I'm really conflicted about this one. Where this book really shines is with the world and the magic system. I love the idea of four fated elemental remnants who are constantly replaced when they die - and the way each remnant has its own element-related characteristics and interactions with the other remnants was such a neat touch. I loved the descriptions of the world as Rhya travelled through it as well, finally ending at Caeldera, the most unique and gorgeous city I've read about in a long time. I would loooove to see some fanart of it because WOW, my jaw dropped when it was first described.

However, the romance was not romancing. I spent most of the book furious about how Penn was treating Rhya - cold and controlling and telling her absolutely nothing, and somehow expecting her to just accept it. Even once they were past the initial hostage stage he continued to treat her like nothing more than his pet to lock away, feeding her the tiniest breadcrumbs of affection to try and keep her obedient. And despite this treatment she still gets the hots for him? There's no way! She had more chemistry with Soren than with Penn. I wouldn't have minded so much but I feel like Penn's control over her really limited the best parts of the story - we barely got to learn anything about the world or her remnant powers because he kept her untrained and tightly controlled.

Overall for me it was an enjoyable read for the fantasy side of things, but the romance was a bit of a let down.
