It started out so strong IMO, but then kinda turned with Penn’s behavior. Sadly. I’m looking forward to book two, even if
I assume there’ll be a love triangle with Soren, or worse, a Tamlin-situation.

Full stop. I had fun. The beginning is immediately immersive and the end is riveting. The middle slows down a lot (maybe 60-80%>) but I still had a lot of fun in this new world.

I don’t think it needed to be 500+ pages - a lot of time were in Rhya’s head and it’s just back and forth and back and forth. And I think there are gaps in the world building but I am excited for Julie to craft it out more in book 2 (like what is the blight?!).

Overall I enjoyed Rhya - very much a new adult heroine with all thus power she can’t control. Penn was hot and broody and a little annoying but they work well together. I did text a friend and say “stop angry kissing and start touching genitals” 😂😂. But Soren?!  I can’t wait for him to meet his match.

This book was really enjoyable. For once it was a romantasy book where the characters don't only think about getting into bed with each other but the romance build up slowly. I would say it took up until 60% of the book, when Rhya and Penn showed some definite affection and began to speak about their feelings.

The plot itself was interesting, I like the elemental magic system and I am definitely intrigued about the prophecy. I see a lot of potential for the next book.

The pacing was nice but it definitely picked up at the end of the book. The writing style is very descriptive but also "flowery", meaning it uses some more unusual words and terms that fit into a fantasy world setting.
