This was a wild ride and I didn't think that I would enjoy it as much as I did. My biggest criticism is that some of the characters from other backgrounds were portrayed in seemingly stereotypical ways, not really for any reason. Additionally, the end ties things up very cleanly, possibly too cleanly. But overall I found this to be very heartwarming. Highly unbelievable, but engaging and entertaining.

May We Be Forgiven was a good book.
George Silver was just an ordinary man coveting his younger more successful brother. But in a matter of days, shit happens. Accidents. Affairs. Anger. The first few chapters grab you in.
It was funny and tragic at the same time and it kept me interested for the most part. Halfway through it, the story felt far-distanced and irrelevant but I stuck through it. Kept reading. It made me laugh a good amount of times but I was really really captivated by the story line. It was good writing and promising.
The things I didn't like about the book were just minor things. I thought the ending was weak; it was good but could have been so much better. The children talk like they're older then they should be.
But overall, I liked it. Much more than most literary fiction/contemporary novels I read.

What on earth ... happened here? The opening 35 or 40 pages are incredible, horrifying, compelling as hell. Afterward? Implausibilities pile up higher and higher, by turns funny and puzzling, bordering on grotesque. Homes's flat style undercuts the depth she seems to be insisting that her characters contain, but not to any larger end; the prose just fails. The book, it pains me to say, fails.
Much, much different from Music for Torching - which I wasn't expecting. As dark as the beginning was, it was way more uplifting and heartfelt overall than Music. I know this is sick, but I didn't like it as much as the other one (which was borderline depraved, and awesome). Still, a solid book with undeniably good writing and an unforgettable (and delightfully hapless) protagonist.

May We Be Forgiven starts fast and strong as we follow the crimes within a family. The majority of the book, however, focuses on the aftermath to the crimes and the impact and reactions or the family. I found this focus unique. Although the progression was a bit understated at times, we gained an idea of how the main character developed as a man through the series of events, despite many ups and downs. It felt like one minute you were on the main character’s side, and the next minute you were frustrated by his actions. Overall, I found this one to be unique, thought provoking, and an intimate look into American family dynamics.

huh. This book was long and included many things, some tragic, some bizzare, some pointless, and some about richard nixon. It also had a lot of sweet moments but i couldn’t quite get over the fact that all this lovely adventure and found-family building and bonding and connection stuff was only possible through the enormous amounts of money the narrator just suddenly comes into. Felt wrong to let myself enjoy it, lot of savior-complexy things going on here.
That being said, i did not dislike reading it, and it did create a whole world to disappear into.
I wish it wrapped up in a more clever or realistic or poignant way.

This book consistently reminded me of The Big Lebowski. It's similarly bizarre entertainment that is ultimately human and blundering and true.
