Deadpool Vs. Gambit

3.26 AVERAGE

This was a bit disappointing. Yeah it had some surprises and such but it was so underwhelming. It kinda felt like it was trying to hard. Then even in the end they were like "oh we threw this in so it would make sense."

Gambit. And Deadpool. Clearly I'll read anything. And yet most of this book was really really good. Silly but funny and sometimes even smart. And then it fell completely over.
SpoilerAnd Loki. And Iron Fist?
So I'm not sure it made much sense in the end. But in the beginning and middle there was sense. And that's more than I expected by far.

Holy fuck, this was bad. Aggressively bad. It was boring, confusing, unfunny, and the art was so ugly that I just absolutely hated looking at it. There were a few good ideas tucked away in the corners of this mini-series but everything around it was unstructured garbage. Deadpool isn't funny when the world around him is as wacky as he is. Gambit isn't convincing as a charming rake when he's drawn like a hairy salamander and talks just like Deadpool. Don't have the She-Hulk in your comic and then never let her do anything. Don't have Loki be the bad guy when his plan is so stupid, even for him. Don't make weird Tumblr and hipster jokes because it makes my skeleton want to force its way out of my body and leave the room. So terrible.

Not really a fan of Deadpool but I liked the movie and I typically enjoy gambit. This was fairly pointless and discombobulated, which might be par for the Deadpool course but not my style so much.

A couple good lines and a redemption of a character I'm barely familiar with. Otherwise, Gambit felt off but hey at least he's in something.

(read as single issues)

This was legit-LOL hilarious and everything I wanted it to be. If you're a fan of Acker & Blacker but not usually sold on Deadpool and/or Gambit I definitely think there's enough of their sensibility in here to make this worth your while. If, like me, you love Deadpool AND Gambit AND Acker AND Blacker, CONGRATULATIONS, THE SECRET WORKS.

The first issue wasn't entirely terrible and there were a few things I did like, like Scrambler's redemption arc, so this just barely avoids a one star rating. Unfortunately, despite the potential of the oddball pairing of these two characters, the writing pretty much fails at actually making Deadpool funny (the only reason to use Deadpool) and Gambit is a one-note womanizing beefcake caricature.
Plus, the twist villain reveal later in the storyline doesn't fit in in any way with that character's portrayal at publication time. This is easily one to skip.

Leave it to Acker and Blacker to come up with the first Deadpool book I have ever enjoyed. Ever!
