This was just an OK book. I would not consider a sequel to the firm. Other than making the main characters name be Mitch and Abby McDeere and then having $10 million in an account from their firm extra escapades, this was entirely unrelated standalone book. I don’t understand why they called it a sequel because it was not. I kept waiting for it to be revealed that the firm had something to do with the plot..

It feels like The Firm married a Tom Clancy novel and had The Exchange. Fun read but not really a law thriller like Grisham's other stories. It was good to catch up with Mitch and Abby again!

So, in full disclosure, I never actually read the book, The Firm because I saw the movie. And I am not a person that can read the book after the movie. I actually rewatched the movie before reading this book just to remind myself of the major plot points even though I know it’s different than the book. I enjoyed this sequel, and it’s seeming like it will become more of a series based on some things that didn’t get tied up in this one. I probably gave this book a slightly higher rating just because I was excited to find out what happened to Abby and Mitch. That said, this wasn’t one of my favorite John Grisham books. I listened to it, and I definitely found myself getting easily distracted, and not really connecting with it. if it does become a series, I’m not sure that I would continue on with it.

John Grisham is reliable as a writer. Some action, law, intrigue. This one (like many of his books) would make an exciting movie. I would see that movie. It would also be middle of the road. Good but not remarkable.

Let me start by saying that I am a big JG fan. That being said this novel was a supreme disappointment. I think I am mostly disappointed because I know the quality of story he can tell when he tries. This was not trying—this was the laziest attempt at a sequel to such an amazing book as the Firm that I can imagine. No court scenes. Hardly any character development. Show, don't tell. Too much narrative, and comparatively little dialog (and pedestrian dialog at that). Blah.

As a big fan of The Firm, I excitedly brought this book on vacation, eager to see what trouble Mitch and Abby might find themselves in. Turns out, nothing I found believable or interesting. The writing is so lifeless, it reads like a weekly grocery list where nothing new is ever added. No character development, no vivid descriptions of exciting locales, awkward phrasing and an unbelievable amount of shallow, misogynistic observations. I finished it with the hope that there would be some fabulous plot twist that would tie it all together. Nope. YAWN. This truly felt like an author phoning it in to get a paycheck. Do better, Mr, Grisham.

This book read like a behind-the-scenes view of a kidnapping/hostage thriller. I waited 350 pages for the twist, the turn, the exciting part. It never came. None of the intrigue, all of the mundanity.

If you ever need an example of how to make a kidnapping/hostage situation boring, give them this book.

I would not have used an existing character like Mitch McDeere to sell this book. Unless, everyone knew it was going to be bad and a decision was made to use a familiar face to sell the work when it wouldn't have sold otherwise?

Hope his next one (if there is one) is much, much better than this.
