Just like the first book, the artwork is immaculate. Paulsen’s biggest strength is her ability to convey emotions through her drawings. I also loved visiting with the vegetable people again, but, unfortunately, those are the only two things that stood out to me about this graphic novel.
Book 1 had a strong premise and goal - Garlic was going to confront a “scary” vampire and had to face her fears to do it. That was straight forward and fun to read. Book 2’s main goal wasn’t easy to nail down.
I think if it had focused on the vegetable people becoming human, it would’ve been stronger. Or, if it had focused on Garlic navigating her magic, it would’ve been stronger. Or, maybe trying to find the perfect concoction for Count’s blood substitute which required going on another adventure. Or, finding a way to help witch Agnes who is clearly struggling with being the only witch. The list could go on, because there were several routes that could’ve been explored. Instead, we lightly touched on all of them without getting deep at all.
I understand that this is a juvenile novel (honestly I loved that about the first book - it was a perfect palette cleanser read), but I still think even younger readers would’ve noticed that there were a lot of different things happening at the same time.
I would still recommend this book for people who loved Garlic and Vampire (if anything, just to see the beautiful artwork) but I’d give them a heads up ahead of time.

I love this sweet little garlic. Fast, wholesome read on this chilly day during my coffee break.
Very good continuation of book one. Highly recommend it! Easy, cute story
