It was quick and easy to read. It didn’t reinvent the wheel but it was fun and kept me reading. I was also in the desperate need for fantasy because I am just not in the mood for the next plain romance.
We are in a world of five courts (gold, earth, ice, fire and shadow). Reyna is a gold-giver, a human who is born with the power to manipulate gold. She is enslaved by the fae who are immortal, have magic and rule the magical courts. All the courts are enemies and would also kill any human from another court so escaping is also difficult. But then she is taken to the shadow court by the Prince of the shadow court because he wants to use her for a mysterious mission.
It was good. Not great but good. I don’t fully understand the world yet and how the magic exactly works. Maybe the book could have used 50 more pages to explore that further. Other than that I did like the other characters at the shadow court (her friends from the gold court are kind of meh) and I hope they will be even more present in the next book. I am also happy that this was single pov. This way the facade of enemies to lovers was somewhat kept, even though it is already pretty obvious that he isn’t evil (which I wish he was a little bit because I want Drama). I don’t have a lot more to say about the book and I will now go and read the second part.

I struggle a bit with FMCs who act so whiney and dumb. I want to see how this story plays out, but a smart woman would shut up and play the game, and Reyna does exactly the opposite. I hope her disposition improves…

I wanted to like this more. It sets up an interesting magic system and is based more in Norse mythology than Celtic lore, which is a cool take. I don’t know if it just wasn’t long enough to do what it wanted to, but it honestly felt like things I didn’t get started until 2/3 of the way through, and that we didn’t really get plot progression until 3/4 of the way through. That said, once it finally got there, it became more interesting. I’m hoping that the next one is more plot heavy, otherwise I’ll be giving up on this one. Honestly though, my biggest gripe is with the FMC who seems to spend more time arguing about her situation than trying to think her way out of it. The characters around her even agree with me. And it’s honestly weird to me that she’s our protagonist but not entirely likable. The uniqueness of the plot, and the fact that the second one comes out in two days have encouraged me enough to continue however, but hoping the FMC grows up a little and that we get less of what feels like it was window dressing rather than necessary to the story.

I love the concept of this book. And i love the way Eliza has a way with descriptions. I can envision everything she writes. Most of this writing was very good, however i do find some of the conversations lacking between characters. The conversations come off childish sometimes which was my same issue with Of Ash and Iron. The cliff hanger has me though, so I’ll be continuing this series.
