I'm just not the kind of person that can give a book that made me that sad and made me cry that much a high rating. I don't read books to have and emotional experience or learn life lessons like they expect every time you're assigned a book to read in school. I read to maybe have a laugh and enjoy something happy or heart warming. I read to forget about how terrible the world can be. Through no fault of the authors, this had a negative impact on my day, so I'm unhappy. That being said, it was well written and did a wonderful job conveying the emotions of the characters. If you like books that stab you in the heart and don't turn around and give you twice as much happiness in the end to make up for it, then this may be a good book for you.

I didn't expect to be sad about a book that started off as porn. But by the final act, I was reeled in and emotionally devastated. At the part where Mike got his concussion was when I started to give a shit about the characters. I didn't like the age gap and it was creepy, but compared to other books I've read lately (cough, Wolfsong, cough) I was willing to give it a pass. Just, god. This fuckin book. This fuckin book. The very last chapter makes me want to sit still and just think for a long time and be sad. Kudos to the author.
Graphic: Sexual content, Suicidal thoughts, Terminal illness, Medical content
Moderate: Vomit, Grief
Again, I’m in the minority here, and I can’t say I’m surprised, because with no synopsis and only good ratings, I just had to know for myself why this book was so high-rated among my friends. The hype was over-whelming and truth is, my curiosity win over my guts.
Unfortunately, Thrown off the Ice was not my cup of tea. But if you’re interested in knowing what’s this book about is basically the story of Mike, a 30 year old hokey player, and Liam, the 18 year old rookie that falls in love with him, despite his awful personality traits.
And let’s be clear about something: age gaps that are beyond 5 years between the MCs always make me feel uncomfortable, and for me to like them, they have to complement each other really well, because if not, I’ll only end up hating their relationship.
So it's no surprise that I didn’t like Liam and Mike as a couple because the only thing they worked just fine was sex time. In fact I think Liam deserve better, because whenever things got rough, Mike was always like We’re not a couple, you’re better off without me without even considering Liam’s feelings. He was young indeed, but Mike should have known better. He didn’t want to have a relationship, yet he didn’t know how to let the kid made his own life.
Shitty as it might seem, I kind of understood where Mike was coming from, being emotionally constipated, but man, he never, not once, told Liam he loved him, or that he actually cared for him, even when Liam sacrificed a lot for him, and had to live with his problems too. Now, I do get he was struggling with his body not functioning the same way, and not being able to have a walk without feeling dizzy, but you don’t have to be an asshole all the freaking time!
To be honest, I only liked the last two chapters in the whole book, and that’s because one of them was told by Liam’s POV. And he summed the whole book up in an article he wrote.
I truly wonder why I didn’t DNF this book when I realized it didn’t have something that I liked. It’s not that I hate it, is just that I didn’t enjoy anything in particular. I guess the only thing that kept me going was the fact that I wanted to know what happened to Mike after he jot injured for real, because a degenerative disease such as Parkinson is something that many people have to deal with in real life.
Anyway, I don’t think I’ll ever read other works from the author, and perhaps that’s a shame since everybody seemed to love this.

I made the mistake of reading the reviews before I picked this up. I recommend going into this knowing this is an emotional and exceptionally well written sports romance, and nothing more. Really, I applaud the writing when compared to most other sports romance. So refreshing when the characters' behavior or reactions don't make me cringe.
Like I said, I knew going in that this was going to be a tear jerker. In the beginning the book was a little unexpectedly smutty, but that's basically just a part of laying down the groundwork. This book is mostly about love. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
Not gonna lie, I'm still crying.

And that one of the main characters was going to die. It soon became apparent which one, and I kept getting emotional about the weirdest things, throughout, knowing where things were headed. In the end, I full on cried for the last couple of chapters. Not gonna lie, I'm still crying.

Wow. I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this book, especially after a rough start. I found Liam to be annoying in the beginning and Mike a little bit dry but as soon as their story progresses, I found that they do belong together.
I loved how Liam barrels through Mike's life like a tornado and Mike adamantly refuses to acknowledge their relationship, but despite Mike's protestation at Liam's constant underfooting as he calls it, Mike lets Liam worm his way in.
The apathetic narrative is a bit quirky, and since this mainly Mike's POV, it certainly matches his personality. Like Mike, it takes some getting used to until it just endears itself to the reader after a while.
Towards the last half of the book, as Mike struggles with his health and feelings, we see more emotion seep out and then it's like the floodgates of tears open, and not for the lack of love but because of love even in small daily doses can be just enough.

Y’all are so wrong for having me read this. I’m in tears, sobbing and ugly crying. That was just pure perfection. A story of love and loss. I don’t have the words to explain what this book has done to me.

The content warning “This is not a romance novel, though it is a love story” really doesn’t warn you about all the emotions you’re going to feel while reading this book.
bc I’m ugly crying at the last three chapters
