Wow, loved reading this book, seeing Gemma and Leo as adults now, and seeing this world from her perspective, was so great! Really enjoyed this story and I can't wait to continue!
Feels like all I’ve been reading lately are spin-offs and for someone who really wasn’t a fan of them, I have to say that I’ve found some good stories that I don’t mind that they’re spin-offs. This is the case with Capture the Crown. It’s a spin off from the Crown of Shards series.
Things from the original series are mentioned/commented on and I didn’t feel like it hindered my reading experience. I’ve read some books where they refer to things from other books and if you haven’t read said book, things feel off.
Gemma is a real cool chick BUT I do have to say that some of her actions, stubborn grudges, and points of view make me question that assessment. An example is this past grudge with Leonidas, it’s totally wrong and warped because of the notoriety his family has. And even when she’s able to “go back” and see that event, she SEES how wrong she is but she’s not willing to admit she’s wrong. The other thing that kind of sort of bugged me about her is that she’s a “spy” of sorts and she sucks at being a spy!!! Lol especially with her powers, I would’ve thought that would really really make her this kickass spy but alas it doesn’t go down that way.
There’s no way to read the book and not feel for Leo. Dude has had it rough. Sure, he’s not the only one with a rough childhood but what gets me is that he doesn’t let that turn him into the monsters that are part of his family. On the contrary it gives him more purpose to fight it. Even with Gemma’s messed up grudge and therefore descriptions of him, I still feel for him.
Through all the ups and downs, I’m totally into this story. I’m going to go back and read the original trilogy while I wait for book 2!

A compulsively readable and fun fantasy featuring a princess who moonlights as a spy, a prince with conflicted loyalties, thrilling action sequences, and some very interesting secondary characters. My fantasy taste usually leans more heavily towards fairy-tale like fantasy but I really enjoy Estep's take on epic fantasy, especially how she lets the reader see her heroines come into their own and become more capable and powerful over the course of each book.

**I was sent an arc copy of Capture the Crown from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own**
This story follows a princess who also works undercover as a spy for her kingdom, and through a series of events ends up undercover in the opposing rival kingdom and has to team up with her mortal enemy, the prince, to find out their secrets. Oh, and her trusted sidekick is a gargoyle!
I really enjoyed this book! The writing style and storytelling reminded me a lot of why I started getting into reading fantasy back in the day. This book read like a perfect balance of adult high fantasy and YA fantasy, & I would definitely recommend this book as a bridge if you’re wanting to read books in the other age range. I also am a sucker for any sort of enemies-to-lovers trope, so I as you could guess I really loved that aspect of the book.
If you’re a fan of The Kiss of Deception, The Queens of Renthia series, Shadow and Bone, or Falling Kingdoms I definitely recommend checking out this book!

This has consistently happened with all the books in the series. While I am reading, I am completely immersed in the book and thoroughly enjoying the fast paced adventure.
However, the minute I put the book down after I finish and think about it. I find so many plot holes and loops where I keep wondering if they really thought that was a good idea.
I will keep reading though because while I am reading they are fun.

Having never read anything from this author, I was unsure what to expect. It was fast-paced with interesting enough characters, though I think if I had read the previous series, I might have connected to this book a bit more. Ended with a cliffhanger, so I'll pick up the next book for sure.

I’m not usually a fantasy girl, but I liked this a lot. There were times it felt slow to me, but I loved how descriptive it was. It was like I was there in the scene with them. I’m very interested in reading the next installment.
