I really enjoyed the majority of this book because the world building was great and I loved the fantasy aspects of it!

What I did not love was Gemma’s continued recklessness. I understand the need for her to put herself in the dangerous situations to keep the story progressing. However, there were several situations where she had these inner monologues about how she SHOULD leave Morta because she knew how dangerous it was.. but then she just needed to know more about Milo’s plans, so she just couldn’t leave yet. It was only a matter of time before her true identity was revealed and she was caught, so it just seemed kind of repetitive and stupid on her part.

The relationship between Gemma and Leo was alright. There wasn’t a ton of progression, even though this book is advertised as a fantasy romance. Any time they got close and she felt the heat between them, she pulled away. Maybe the romance aspect will progress further in the remaining books.

I liked the friendship growth between Gemma, Delmira, & Raco. I hope Gemma can eventually forgive Delmira because I really liked her character and I’m interested to see what her power is.

I am invested and excited to read the rest of the books!

It's dull and repetitive. The FMC has a back story of guilt that just doesn't make sense and we have to hear about it over, and over, and over, and over. Same with how the MMC and she tried to kill each other as children. Over, and over, and over, and over.

Then there's all the different shades of purple. Over, and over, and over, and over.

I gave this one a bit longer than I do most books that I don't connect with since I've enjoyed other books by this author. I kept hoping it would get better. Nope.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Capture the Crown was so much fun to dive into! Now it has been a while since I've read a book by Jennifer so I will admit that freaked out when I got accepted to read this one. That last series I dove into was so freaking good that I went into this one with high expectations. Honestly, not disappointed by anything right now.

In it, you will meet Gemma. She is a princess and a spy. In the words of Hannah Montana.. she's got the best of both worlds. Maybe? Not sure. I will admit that she was a pretty interesting and likable character though. Plus the adventure that she went on was loads of fun. Definitely made this a page turner.

Oh and her love interest? Public enemy number one. Which, hello, I'm sold (again). Honestly, each and every one of her enemies were very intriguing. I just wanted to get to know them a bit more and explore their side of evilness.

With each twist and turn, I was constantly on the edge of my seat. I had no idea what was going to go down and that's what kept this being a fun book to devour. Even though the beginning started off a bit slowly for me. It definitely picked up before things felt like they were dragging.

In the end, I loved this book and can't wait for the next one to come out!

It is simply not fair that I have to wait until 2022 for the next book in this series.

Jennifer Estep just keeps getting better. The first foray into Crown of Shards universe was...alright. Evie and Lucas are fun, you believe wholeheartedly in them and their trials and triumphs, but something was missing. What? I'm not sure. But whatever it was is PRESENT and unleashed in full-force with Capture the Crown. The expansion of the world is on point, the growth of returning characters is logical yet still enjoyably surprising, the pacing is tighter than a Bellonan corset and the relationship between our two leads is ~chef's kiss~.

From the moment Gemma Ripley waltzed onto the page with her faithful companion Grimley in Protect the Prince, I wanted more; and the decision to age her up for this new series works perfectly with the tone set by Crown of Shards. Like her Aunt Evie, she is strong-willed, fiercely loyal and clever, but otherwise she stands on her own as a fully-fleshed out heroine. Defining acts of her childhood serve as a background to the tapestry of Gemma, and while the reader is privileged with some of the knowledge as to who she is, there were still many fun surprises to be had.

And then Leonidas. Sweet, cinnamon roll Leonidas. There is nothing I did not love about this character and the man he's grown into. While Estep uses the events of the Regalia in Crush the King as the jumping off point for the reader's familiarity with our Leo, he quickly moves beyond the terrors of those days and (while I think he'd refuse to admit it) there's a sunny-eyed optimist lurking beneath the many necessary walls he's erected in order to survive in the Mortan court.

Cannot wait to see these two continue their dance in the next book. I need for Gargoyle vs Strix sass fights; and, again, it is not FAIR that I have to wait until 2022.

I get annoyed when characters make decisions that are obviously stupid, not wrong but stupid, even when they are warned that they are being stupid and that they may get themselves killed but they go merrily on their way doing stupid things. Gemma did several stupid things and she didn’t have any reason to put herself in danger. I skimmed the last half of the book because I was so annoyed at her.
