Another fun little story about the glorious triumph of the power of friendship (and tape).

(Really though, Yen Sid? REALLY??)

This is the sequel to the Descendant movie. Mal, Jay, Evie, and Carlos have adjusted to life in Auradon, but when their parents suddenly go missing they return to the Isle of the Lost.

This book takes place a few days after the film. The villain kids have adjusted to life in Auradon, King Ben wants to allow more Isle kids into the school. But when a dragon is seen attacking different kingdoms, Ben has to re-evaluate the kingdom’s stand on magic and find out who is behind the attacks.

I think I enjoyed this book more than the first one. There was still the strong platonic friendship between all the characters. This has to be my favorite aspect of the series. Mal, Jay, Evie and Carlos are just so supportive of one another, they see themselves as friends and sibling.

Another big theme of this book confronting one’s fear. These kids believe they are going to be just like their parents. They had to complete impossible task and they found so much inner strength to accomplish that.

I give this book a B-. This book had so many more cameos of popular and somewhat forgotten Disney villains. I hope we continue to have more books and movies.

Not as fun as the first book.

Although this book was enjoyable to read in the way that it flew by so fast, I had a few problems with the pacing and I didn't really think the plot was solid.

For the first 200 pages, nothing really happened. The true action started around 250 pages in, which is a bit too late. The actually interesting scenes were over in a few pages and the ending was a big WTF, and not in a good way.
SpoilerWe never really find out how the villain parents got away. We actually never see them, which is just wtf.
I also think the whole plot twist/reveal at the end didn't make sense in context with the story as a whole.
SpoilerIt would have been more interesting if it actually was Maleficent.

The multiple POV was a bit boring at times because the same kind of scenario was repeated in each one for like 50 pages (re: pacing issues. 50 pages could have been used to further explain the ending... Just saying.)

All in all, not the best book, but not the worst. I wouldn't recommend it, to be honest, but if you want to give it to a kid or something, go ahead; it's not that bad.

Not gonna lie, I was happier with this than I was with the descendants movies. Although it felt a bit rushed, it will be fun to see how Cruz develops the world through her novels.

We have enjoyed reading these books as we have enjoyed getting to know the characters through the movies. They're easy to read and keep both my six year old and I involved in the plot line. I would definitely recommend these books to others. I enjoyed how this book supplemented to the movies and happens after the first movie.
