I was a little worried going into this book after not enjoying Burned (book 7). However, I was pleasantly surprised. I’m giving this three stars because it’s balanced with pros and cons.

Pros:
- The little bit of action they had was exciting.

- Sgiach’s island is pretty cool.

- Rephaim finally chose Stevie Rae and Light.

- Interesting and unpredictable things happen. Like Kalona being able to enter Stark’s body through spirit. Or how Heath gets the option to come back as “Aurox.”

Cons:
- Jack’s death. I really didn’t care for him too much, but to make him go out belting Defying Gravity?? Wtf?

- Still way too much pop culture references. Give it a rest.

- The verbiage and dialogue have me cringing every second.

- I think this time there were 10 different POVs. STOP.

I have to be totally honest. I loved the first four books in the series. I loved the drama of vampire school and the whole learning about yourself, but the last few books have really dragged. I don't feel a lot happens and there is almost no focus on the school. I find myself still reading them because I have invested so much and I just need to know how it will all end. :(

This was too sad!!!!!! The reason I only gave it four stars is because i thought the story could have done without all the obvious hints that something terrible was going to happen to jack it was unnecessary and a little annoying. The actual death was heartbreaking and didn't need the extra build up drama. It really was sad because daimian obviously loved him and there was never any drama between them. I feel bad for Zoey too because she never seems to get any kind of break. The ending was awful too even though she didn't like her mum too much it was sad that she died. I am glad it seems to work out between raphium and stevie

The story isn’t bad. The things that detract are the underlying racism, homophobia and misogyny. Years ago reading through it, I didn’t see it. Now it’s more than a little cringe.

What do all the black characters have to talk like they’re from the ghetto? While there is nothing inherently wrong with the language pattern, it’s its usage to identify these characters as ‘black’ that bothers me.

There are several comments made about gays as well that I can’t remember off the top of my head.

I hope the authors have grown beyond their ignorance.

“What more could you want? How about dominion over this 'beautiful place'? Beauty doesn't last. Friends and family decay. Power is the only thing that goes on forever."
Jack answered with his gut. "No, love goes on forever.”

THIS BOOK!!!!!
This book was nominated in 2011 for two Goodreads Choice Awards and oh boy, it has HELD UP. It gets so real and things really start to heat up. Major changes and tragedies that are going to ultimately lead to the final battle.
Spoiler Jack's death makes me so sad every time, as does Linda's even though she is a minor character. I also enjoy that we get Heath back in the form of Aurox...I can't wait to see more of him.
.

I can't. I can't deal with this series anymore. It's so frustrating to see something like this get published when I've read fan fiction (I've read some great and some crappy fan fiction in my day) and first drafts of NaNoWriMo novels better than this. Frankly, I don't think P.C. and Kristin Cast can write. At least not together. Their writing is cringe-worthy at best. I found myself screaming in frustration throughout most of the book. Unnecessary drama and angst. That's all it is.

I had such high hopes for this series at the very beginning (re: the first three books). The concept seemed somewhat original (that term being used lightly) and the characters were somewhat interesting. Now, eight books later, it's gone. The characters are now stereotypical shells of what they used to be. You have the stereotypical gay boys, the snobby bitch, the best friends who are so insparable they act like twins, the evil villian, the Mary Sue who EVERYONE loves and can do EVERYTHING, etc. It's not fun anymore. As a writer, you're supposed to make characters that are relatable to the reader. I didn't care about any of them.

Also, the pop culture references. I'm sorry, that's never, ever a good idea. In fifteen (or hell, even ten) years from now when someone is reading this book, do you think they are going to know what the hell Glee was? More than likely not because it's not going to last that long. It's just going to date the book and it will disconnect the reader from The House of Night World.

There are so many other things in this book that I have problems with, but I'm not even going to get started on that. Mostly because I don't want to sit at the computer all morning complaining (and rightfully so) about how awful this book was. I could nitpick at everything little thing, but I won't.

As much as I wanted to stick with this series until it was done, I don't think I'll be able to. I've recently heard that there might be twelve book in the series. Honestly, that's not necessary. Especially if they're going to be as awful as this one (and they probably will).

Long story, short: Don't bother reading this. It's not really worth it. I'll never get those three days back.

Ugh. P.C. and Kristin Cast, THAT'S NOT HOW YOU BOOK!
