This lost me mid-way. Not sure why, it sounded like a good book and I was interested in finding out how these women got their lives back. It just didn't draw me in, and I gave up waiting for something to happen.

This was a very good book. I enjoyed the characters and even the flashbacks to WW2. It could have been much longer. Once you have characters and stories like these, why stop after less than 300 pages? That's not to say it was too short—I think Diamant did exactly what she aimed to, show a brief period of time and one story in the not-too-well-know history of immigration to the Jewish state.

One really interesting thing is how the story of illegal immigrant camps reflects on politics today.

Historical plot is very interesting. However, I found the characters of this story poorly written. Too many main characters and most of them flat and underdeveloped.

This was a great book about the aftermath of World War II and the initial settling of Israel. The people portrayed in this book seemed very real, enlightening, heart-warming and tenacious. They all survived terrible hardship to get to yet another prison camp. Ultimately it was their survival abilities that led them to their new homes.

3.5 I particularly enjoy books that teach me something I didn't know. For instance, I had no idea that Jews who fled to the Palestine after WW2 were held in "detainee camps" that were surrounded by watch towers and barbed wire. This particular historical fiction story follows four women in Atlit where we learn a little about their history and what they survived before arriving.
