Where to begin? First, I was not really excited about this book. The whole obssessed girl plot is not really my thing, so my hopes were low. Maybe that's why I don't have any strong feelings about this book, and I actually liked it a little more than I thought I would.
That being said, I don't know how this is a romance. I liked the characters individually, especially Aisling, who was not like I thought. Sam was a good character too I liked that both of them had an interesting backstorys. But for the most part of the book, I couldn't see them as a couple. They didn't had any moments of chemistry or tension, and I didn't feel any build up for their relationship. It felt like only the last 20% of the book was really a romance.
The mistery thing worked, and it was very interesting and unexpected for Aisling's character. She was a good surprise, even though sometimes I felt like her attitudes were confusing, but I guess that's life. I don't mind a poor sad rich girl/boy in fiction, it usually make them interesting. Sam was just another version of all os LJ males, but we are used to that.
Mu main concern here is that this book did not set any grounds for The Rake. Emabelle was barely mentioned, and so was Devon. They had much more page time in The Villain, which makes me think that maybe their book should came after Persy and Cillian. If It had not been already interested in the characters, there was nothing here to make me anticipate the next book.
This was a fitting 3 star read. Not memorable, not bad (like The Hunter was).

This was a mess. I’m so upset. I’m going to blame the pandemic and quarantine brain for this hot ass mess.
A mob boss that fake gags like 10 year old girl, I can’t even deal. This was bad.

I really wish I could get my time back. The other books were done so good and this was just a flop

If you read Sparrow first you know a bit about Sam’s past. His mom solidified his distrust and hate of women after she abandoned him. Years later he runs into Aisling at a fair where she is crying. He kisses her, murders someone in front of her, and threatens her. Normal meetcute things. Shortly after his sister lives with her brother. And the two go years dancing around each other. Sam learns something about her father and tries to destroy him. He also starts learning some of Aisling’s secrets which make her more alluring to him.
Aisling was so thirsty for Sam I was getting secondhand embarrassment for her. The men in this series really treat their ladies like trash until they turn a corner. When they finally do I am smitten and am full blown committed to their relationship.
Overall book ⭐️⭐️⭐️
