although red dragon has a very intriguing plot, it isn't half as interesting as the author seemed to think it was. maybe this just wasn't the book for me, but i find it hard to enjoy a reading when i root for the good guys simply because the bad guy is even less interesting than they are. also, the lack of hannibal lecter? completely unacceptable. i'm willing to say the two stars i'm rating this are only there for the three times we heard of lecter.

this is honestly such a great book and it helped restore my love for reading. after watching all 3 seasons of nbc hannibal (great show btw), i decided i wanted to consume more hannibal media and i was not disappointed.
although i really enjoyed the show’s version of the red dragon storyline, i have to say that i found the book to be even better. imo the show didn’t have enough episodes (only half of season 3) to really do the red dragon story justice. while there were some very odd things in the book that i am glad were omitted from the show (eg will having a foot fetish?????), there was so much that should’ve been put in the show that wasn’t. i really love how the book does a deep dive into francis dolarhyde’s childhood in order to explain to the audience exactly why he is the way he is, which just doesn’t happen in the show. i find that this aspect makes the story just that bit more heartbreaking in the book compared to the show.
