Interesting look at the history of computer gaming from the inside.
The gradual professionalization, and the struggle with being absorbed into a corporate behemoth.
The disappearing floppies and CDs, and the arrival of project managers and specialists.

I'm sure every review says this but....

As a developer, I *loved* the insight into the history of how Sid got started. These stories painted such a great picture of the gaming industry that I grew up in. I remember as a small child having to look through manuals to find the 12th word on the 87th page to unlock my games. It was a blast from the past and awesome insight into the games that I love. I can't see what's in store next for Sid!

Growing up with Sid Meier's Civilization series, it was a blast reading about the (development) history of these and other games of his. As the subtitle already suggests, the memoir dives less into Meier's personal life and puts his computer games on center stage instead. I was surprised the nuggets of wisdom Meier imparts are useful not only to game designers but to anyone engaged in creative pursuits. All in all a quick read I thoroughly enjoyed.

Favourite quote:
'A bad game strands you in the past (as in, “What just happened?”) while a mediocre one keeps you in the present (“Sure, this is cool.”). But a really good game keeps you focused on what's yet to come.' (Sid Meier, p. 196)

I used to scour GameStop in search of every strategy and tycoon game. I had an ongoing argument with someone in my high school about whether Age of Empires or Civilization was better (Civ OBVIOUSLY). My now-husband and I spent our entire second date discussing our best Civilization playthroughs. When my oldest was born, I would play Civ VI at night while nursing her. I have many fun and interesting memories that can be directly traced back to Sid Meier. I was going to enjoy this book.

Entertaining read on the achievements of a great game designer. Good book no matter whether you're a video game enthusiast or just interested in the most popular strategy game franchise.

What an absolutely remarkable memoir. If you game, you've heard of Sid Meier. In fact, you may have heard of him even if you don't.
I was so enthralled with this book. It was amazing to hear how one of the world's most well known video game developers has developed his long history of games. He gives advice that would honestly work in any sort of creative career. Along with talking about his own life, it was interesting to see how gaming developed as a whole. He speaks of the beginnings of conferences like E3 and companies growing and changing throughout the years, although through the perspective of his own games.
I also found the achievements found throughout the book hilarious. Making the reading like a game itself. I highly recommend this book for any fellow gamers out there.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of the book in return for an honest review!
