vibe is: prickly eldest daughter w/ avoidant attachment befriends her “nemesis” online using her gaming persona & then they become friends/crush on each other IRL.

The author talked a lot about misogyny in the real world and in gaming culture when it comes to strong women and how they’re often seen as “bitches” for speaking their minds. The FMC is strong willed and unapologetically direct and unbothered by these misnomers which is really nice. But she also admits it’s lonely being so opinionated & that she pushes people away preemptively so they can’t leave.

Rather than try to change her tho, the MMC sees her for her whole self and hyped up her attributes as positives. He also immediately understands during the reveal why a woman playing video games would try to pass as a man to avoid harassment which was SUCH a relief that we could skip the whole ‘let me convince a man that women experience the world differently and sometimes have to protect themselves’ convo.

For a book about two 17-year-olds playing a video game, there is an surprising amount of politics. Pretty much every other sentence in the female protagonist's pov mentions some form of political stance that, while I don't disagree with Vi's points, gets increasingly repetitive and annoying.

The banter however is very good, and the way the budding relationship is approached? Chefs kiss

This book was such a masterpiece! I’ve only read 2 books by Alexene/Olivie and both have been absolute masterpieces honestly so I definitely need to read so many more please and thanks!

I could relate to Viola and her angst so so much! I wasn’t a gamer when I was a teen, but I was quite nerdy so all of her little quirks and interests were so much fun! I honestly wish I had her boldness when I was her age- I’m still working on it.

This story was so real and so beautiful and I’m struggling to make words to capture it so I guess you’ll just have to read it for yourself to see how wonderful it really was!

The relationship dynamics and internal conflicts were really well done and spotlighted here.

It’s definitely a high school romance: trying to find yourself and your truth, trying to maintain friendships in a constantly shifting social environment, friendships breaking and coming back together, silent treatments as responses, choosing to avoid rather than confront what your trying to deal with.

The characters have interesting ways to deal with their insecurities. We have Vi who is an argumentative internet feminist who will fight before anything, but she (usually) has good reasons for. She’s willing to take control of the situation before someone takes it from her, it’s a way to protect herself from disappointment and rejection by not having expectations and being the first to reject or give them a reason to reject her.
Then we have our football player, jack, who mostly fawned to get through things. He’s the mediator, crack a smile and a joke and they can’t help but be willing to compromise with him. Until he hits a few situations where that won’t work and then he’s totally lost. Its someone who thought their life was set for them and then realizes that he may have to reevaluate and is completely lost.

Overall it was a good romance story (there is a 3rd act break up) and a coming of age story for multiple characters.

I didn’t realize it was going to be a literal modern day Twelfth Night and it felt very much like she’s the man.
