This was apparently designed as the jumping off point into Avengers comix for people who liked the movies. COOL THAT DESCRIBES ME PERFECTLY, THANX MARVEL.

I still don't know wtf is going on out in outer space but I don't think it really matters b/c this has plenty of Tony and Clint being assholes and Hulk smashing stuff and Natasha being awesome so like, I'll keep reading it. For sure.

On the whole, a decent plot, but it very obviously shoehorned in the movie Avengers, plus Guardians of the Galaxy.

To be honest, I don't care about the GotG, and Marvel Studios wanting to make a film about them is not enough of reason for me to care.

But I was not entirely sober when I wrote this review, so there is that, too.

Not bad, but nothing super amazing to write home about either. Mostly read this as a foundation so I could read the next trade in the series.

Since I've become so obsessed with Hawkeye and Captain Marvel, I wanted to try reading more about the Avengers, and this run of Avengers Assemble seemed like a great place to start.

It's actually a great time to read this one. The main villain is Thanos, who will be the villain in the next Avengers movie, and this particular volume also features the Guardians of the Galaxy, whose movie is coming out this summer. So in essence, this volume worked as a basic intro to some characters I will be seeing more off in the MCU throughout the next year.

This is a fun story, but there's so many characters in this book that it's hard to really get to know any of them. You get little moments here and there that reinforce what you already know about characters, and get surface info on many others, but it's a little hard to emotionally engage when there are so many characters to focus on.

I'll obviously keep reading this title, and I hope that my enjoyment of it grows with each volume.

It's not bad. The banter between Hawkeye and Black Widow was fun, but it was a bit boring.

This was so incredibly average.

I see where it was meant to be an easy access point to new readers coming out of Avengers (2012). The roster is the same, there's no real knowledge of the past necessary and the arc is about the cosmic cube. It's not complex or complicated and it's all entirely new.

This has a bland version of the MCU characterization, too. Right down to Tony mentioning that he's a billionaire a lot. You know, I've only ever read him saying things like that in Whedon and Bendis' writing. Could that be because he canonically doesn't mention that every 5 seconds? Could it be it's just these two writers that are focusing super hard on the fact that Tony's rich? I think so.

Anyway, that makes for yet another semi recent Avengers book that feels super shallow. There weren't any real character moments. Natasha doesn't get to do much and her great saves are offset by an unnecessary make out scene with Clint and ass shots of her floating through space. Just once, I would like to read a comic that switches all of this so every single one of Captain America and Thor's great saves are drawn from the perspective of their hind quarters. Would men object to having to watch Cap defeat Hydra when every shot made them come face to face with his ass?

Anyway, the Guardians' dialogue is okay. As a plot, this was just okay. There wasn't anything particularly special about this book. I'm not mad, I'm just... eh.

Hmm. This was not nearly as good as I had hoped it would be. Story was excessively sci-fi, in that in just eight issues, things escalated the the Ever Greater Power. Ending was meh. Artwork was undetailed, and just not as good as it should have been. Given that this retailed at $3.99/issue, I would say it's not worth at all. Bendis only wrote these eight (short) issues, with Kelly Sue DeConnick taking over for the next arc. So maybe I'll check it out. When it's discounted.

Slow to start, but a surprisingly good book. Avengers team up with the Guardians of the galaxy to battle Thanos.

The team of Avengers from the blockbuster film, Thanos (teased at the end of said film), and the Guardians of the Galaxy (soon to be in a blockbuster film of their own) all in one place. It ain't great; it ain't awful. It's fun, it's fluffy, it's a quick read -- a good introduction to the main Marvel Universe for people who only know the movie counterparts.

Fun, but I feel like it was a launching point for Bendis's upcoming Guardians run. I like Kelly Sue DeConnick's run better.
