I would've finished this much sooner, but I paused to go to Booknet Fest in the middle. No regrets.
Lady Schwab subscribes to the Neil Gaiman/Doctor Who way of children's books, wherein you scare the ever holy crap out of them to prep them for a long life of loving horror and mystery novels.
It is EXCEPTIONALLY effective.
In this book, Cassidy Blake, ghost hunter extraordinary, has moved her actions from Scotland to the streets of Paris. Her parents, The Investigators, have an over abundance of sites to choose from, if Cassidy's near inability to avoid the veil is anything to go by.
We don't pick up directly after the events of City of Ghosts, but the feeling is still there. Cassidy's concerns about Jacob's growing powers, her understanding of what her 'job' is when it comes to helping lost souls move on.
Then she gets to Paris, and that job gets blown directly out of the water when she meets a poltergeist.
Poltergeists freak me out. Yes, we had Peeves from the Harry Potter universe to soothe that fear, but honestly, I grew up watching those movies way too early and just the name gives me the heebie jeebies.
The poltergeist is a very young boy, early 20th century aged, and while it would seem like he'd be friendly and playful, this is one angry little boy. Picture a child tantrum aged but with the powers of a poltergeist. That's hell on earth.
And Cassidy's learned methods just don't work on him. So, she has to learn something new, all while dodging his attempts to...erm. Well, would saying he's trying to kill her be too extreme?
For a short book, it packs a lot of creep factor. And the last chapter set my teeth on edge like few books have. But as creepy as the book does turn out to be, there is a real sadness underlying the story, and it's impossible not to feel it.
How long, exactly, do I have to wait for book 3?

I loved this book even more than the first! This sequel is dark and French, which makes Paris such a great setting!
I have always had a morbid curiosity for the Catacombs and would love the opportunity to visit.

4.5* I have to say the Harry Potter references are tiring, other than that great book esp. for middle grade

I am absolutely enjoying this series so much. I have missed Cassidy's and Jacob's story. In hope I'll get book #3 soon!
Paris was definitely a good choice for a haunting story. It kinda makes me want to go there again, and see the catacombs, instead of only wandering around for the art galleries.
"He seems happier, lighter, after sharing his story. I feel a little heavier after hearing it, but that's okay. That's how friendship works. You learn to share the weight." - p283.

Moderate: Child death, Death

I just love the story here and the characters. Victoria has such a way with tales and she is so good about these little sentences in the story that just stick with you. The story continued, this time in Paris, and it did not disappoint. I slightly liked the first one better but very excited to move on to number 3.
