Kirkman's writing is so enticing. When you get emerged in the story you just can't stop going.

Volume 5 of The Walking Dead graphic novel series is significantly darker than the previous volumes. When I think about it though, each volume has really gotten progressively darker and darker.

I'm not saying this is a bad thing. Actually, it rings pretty true given the dark world they all live in now. But, just a fair warning to those who are fans of the TV show because it is definitely darker than the TV show. I think I'm still a bigger fan of the TV show because it seems like the good in each person is brought more to the surface and that creates little sparks of hope. With the graphic novel everyone isn't a bad person per se, but there certainly seems to be more evil in the world.

In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, here are some of the concepts that you'll find in this volume:
The two biggest ones are: a pretty brutal rape (although it is tastefully drawn without outwardly drawing what's happening), and the other is hints at a polygamous marriage. I don't think the polygamous marriage will even happen, but it's something that's thrown out there and I think it's done to show how out of touch (and crazy) some people in the group are becoming.

Although I don't necessarily like reading about those things (especially the first one), I'm not opposed to them being in the series because, given the situation they're in, it's realistic. I like that the writers are sticking with being more realistic than doing things the easy way.

So even though some tough subjects are brought up and things do get a little darker in this volume, I actually like the direction it's going in and I hope that the writers continue to stay true to their vision rather than making things appear happier than they probably would be if this were happening in real life.

The Governor appears!

I remember absolutely LOATHING the Governor on the show when I realized what a godforsaken psychopath he was. He's apparently even worse in the comics, and I'm actually glad the show toned things down. I'm pretty sure my jaw was dropped for the whole second half of this volume!

Rick has been through so much, and he definitely has changed over the books. I’m surprised that they’ve lasted this long in the prison.

Ummm some things...yikes. another arc that the TV show handled a lot better in my opinion.
