For some time it was really slow-paced. Close to the end it got really exciting again (and disgusting) and we got to know Woodbury.
Things just got so incredibly wild and scary. The Governor is a sick, sick man. I'm so glad that things were changed to what they did in the show because some of this is just too much.
Introduction of the Governor. Prison community attempts to come to terms with the loss of two in the last book.
Did the writers really need to go there? Yes, I guess they did. There are many high ratings for this volume. So either readers overlooked the beyond horrible thing that happened to one of the female characters or they explain it away as something that would really happen when crazy people take control of a community. Just because there are people like that in the real world and this one where Walkers exist, doesn't mean we want to read about it. Seeing it with the illustrations made it that much worse. If the writers want to show all sides to people, so be it. I just don't want to read about sadistic people going off on other people.

Oh, the trouble start... the Governor is here! I'm excited to continue. I believe this one was one of my favorites.

After reading book 5, my review of book 4 should have been higher than I gave it. Book 4 showed the impending savage nature of humanity while still being beautiful subtle until the emotionally jarring outburst in the closing pages of the story. Yet I didn't want to give it 5 stars because, for the most part, nothing happened. The action was stagnant even though the characters gained quite a bit of depth.
Because of my previous rating, I must give book 5 only 3 stars, as it has been the weakest book of the series so far. It was still an enjoyable quick read and there is plenty of action to drive the plot of the story, but the beautiful subtlety of the previous book is completely lost in this new installment. Kirkman instead shows the complete and utter inhumanity of a different group of inhabitants living in the apocalyptic wonderland with beautiful little bits of humanity shining through (the man's interaction with his zombie daughter, the way he acts as governor of his town and cares for the people who live there, etc).
Although it has its exceptional moments, it was not nearly as well crafted as the previous book, but I look forward to how the story is progressing.

5/5
This is the first time we meet the Governor, and may I just say if we thought we was ruthless in the show, well meet comic-book Governor because not only is he knife-crazy (chop chop) but he is also a rapist. I am wonderfully surprised at how Kirkman is just able to keep the suspense in the air as he adds new characters/antagonists and new plotlines to his story. It seems realistic in a sense, and never seems too far out.
