I wrote, "Meh." As I recall, the tone was much more middle reader and flat than I'd hoped.
I pretty much love anything written by Cabot, and while this did not top my favorite, I did enjoy it. She actually made death and the Underworld seem interesting instead of creepy. Pierce is a bit weak, but she is just a 17 year old. I have a feeling her character will grow in strength as the series continues, at least I hope she does.
It was ok. not my first choice, but it was in the house, and I needed something to read! Easy read, But I would not want to read it again!

While slowly paced for a portion of the book the ending redeems Abandon big time with some action and a small cliffhanger. If you’re a fan of Meg Cabot and the Greek myth I would recommend it but, if you’re on the fence about this book, I’d say wait for the second book of the trilogy to come out — because you KNOW it’s going to be action packed! Please read the full review.
This book mad me mad. I ranted outloud to my roommate the whole time. I still have not decided if i have read this book before
I would probably give it three stars if it wasn't Meg Cabot, which meant my expectations were high because I adore her books. It was okay, but the ending was "dun-dun-dun... wait for the next book!" and I hate that. I want the book to work alone, too, not just be the first chapters of a longer book - or just write a longer book, then! Don't write a book that can't be an experience in itself! It really didn't bring enough to the table for me - I didn't care all that much about Pierce and I didn't understand her relationship with John - why would he be so interested in her? What's special about her? She didn't strike me as terribly special. It just didn't have the depth of character her other books have. Not that I won't be reading the next one, because I probably will, just to see...
Seriously Meg? Flat stereotypical characters and a tired fantasy romance formula? Only oh wait..this time its a retelling of Persephone, that's new! Not to mention you made the guy look like a broody possessive psycho..but wait he's hoooooot so that forgives everything. Bad bad bad.... If someone else writes one more character story like Bella Swan and Edward Cullen I'll blind myself...no wait I don't mean that because I don't have enough eyes to seriously repeatedly blind myself that many times.
I was confused for most of this book- having finished it but not read the sequels (yet), I'm thinking it might have been better to combine all three books into one larger novel instead of a trilogy. The premise is certainly interesting and the writing draws you in.
Spoiler
I hope that there'll be more explanation of why John fell in love with Pierce and why she was struggling so hard with life after dying (that's the main part I didn't really understand -- ok, people thought she was crazy and she was trying to fight evil, but why did that mean she couldn't learn how to drive or succeed in school? I wish there was more written on that.)
I rarely ever dislike a book. I mean I'm usually pretty positive about books, and even if a book isn't my favorite I still think it is ok. But I really did not like this book. I got it as a gift and felt obligated to read it and even though I always finish a book I start, this was not worth the time.
