I found this book really interesting for many reasons. (1) I'm a big fan of modern retellings or adaptations of ancient stories and this did a good job of having the flavors of a modern retelling without precisely following the ancient storyline. (2) I found it very interesting to spend so much time inside the head of a teenage girl (the age my own daughter will be at some point), thinking in ways that are often different from the ways I thought at that age. (3) The puzzle of how the artifact that protects the wearer from evil kept my problem-solving brain running, trying to understand what the artifact was announcing.
I will be reading the 2nd book in this series as soon as my library can get it to me.

I thought it was a good start. I've noticed a trend lately, everyone thinks the have to write every story into a series. So, as I read this and I noticed I was almost done, and I thought, this feels like an intro or at least the first part of the story to give you background and start a story. It felt like it should be the first part of a book, not part 1 of a series. I enjoyed the idea, but felt it took a long time to get there, and there is more to tell. Kind of wish I could have just waited until all three books of the series are out and read them at once, so I can feel like I read a complete book.
Dear Meg Cabot,
I love you. You always have such fun in your stories. Your writing is addicting to me. You're one of those authors I can recommend with confidence because you just don't fail!
And then I read Abandon. I was so excited. Greek mythology is all the rage (thank you, Rick Riordan). Fairy tales and myths retold is all the rage (thank you Shannon Hale). Mystical YA love stories are all the rage (thank you Stephenie Meyer). *Good* YA novels are all the rage (thank you, YOU, Meg Cabot!). So what happened? This was just... long-suffering. Sooooo much narration. Get on with the story! And don't take an entire chapter describing a person without ever telling us who you're actually talking about! SO FRUSTRATING. I was ready to give up on the book... And then it got good. And then it ended. So now I have to go and read the next book and hope with everything in my soul that Meg Cabot will bring it back and redeem herself. Because this book wasn't *bad*. It just wasn't *great*. It bordered on good. Bring it back, Meg. I'm counting on you...

Dark and mysterious and a really original retelling of the Persephone myth with a classically likable Meg Cabot protagonist. I took a star off because I got really annoyed when I realized that this is a trilogy and therefore was going to have absolutely no resolution whatsoever.

Only Meg Cabot could make you want to date the Lord of the Underworld!
It was okay. But felt there was to much 'in her head' moments which to be fair justified towards the end of the book but losing interest is very easy with the storyline.
Took a bit to get into, but then I loved it. I love the Persephone myth, and I'm excited someone gave it a modern twist. Looking forward to the sequel.
I really liked this book. And I love Meg Cabot and her writing. But I did feel that this book wasn't as witty and funny as most of her other books. That is why this book doesn't get five stars. But I did like the story line and the romance was great.
