I bought this to give to my four year old niece for her birthday. Now I have to convince myself to actually give it to her and not keep it for myself. I absolutely love Molly Idle's storytelling sensibility. Her artwork is beautiful and especially magical in this tale of a young mermaid named Pearl.

A copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book was absolutely stunning! I loved the style in which each illustration was created, as well as the colours used. (You can see some examples from Amazon.com of what the interior looks like here, here, and here!) I seriously had to take a moment to admire each page after reading the words, wanting to take in every little detail. I generally enjoy visuals of underwater scenes, but the illustrations in Pearl are definitely at the top of my favourite list (and I will also be keeping an eye on this author)!
The story itself also clicked very well with the style and colouring of this picture book. Pearl teaches readers, young and old, about the importance of the small things in life, and that even small responsibilities can be very very important. This book also spoke to me about not dismissing something too quickly because it seems unimportant. Life surprises us in a number of ways, and I think that Pearl depicts this effectively and beautifully! I recommend this book to readers of all ages!

Oh boy, what a beautiful book!! After the wildly popular 'Tea Rex' series from Idle, I was curious to see what she'd do next. I really adore her concepts and illustrative style, and it was really time for a fresh concept from her. I anticipated the H E C K out of this book and was not disappointed!
The rich, full-bleed, original style of illustration in this book matches a meaningful story that kids will connect with and that adults will take something away from, too. Guaranteed to be a hit with readers of all ages.

I loved this until the ending. The grain of sand becomes the moon? Eh. Not a huge fan, but my daughter loved listening to this in Vox Book form.

A beautiful book about a mermaid girl who feels that she's old enough to be of help to the other mermaids. Her mom gives her a job, but the girl feels that the job is not big enough, so she gets upset. Little does she know how important her job really is. Pretty pictures in a soothing palette of ocean blues and corals make this a fantastic bedtime tale for your little mermaid!

A beautiful book about a mermaid named Pearl that reads like a fable. Each mermaid has an important role to fulfill in the ocean and Pearl becomes upset when hers is taking care of a single grain of sand. Through Pearls care the sand forms into a pearl that grows everyday until it becomes the full moon. By the end of the book Pearl better understands her role which she learns to love. The illustrations are beautiful but can be small sometimes and would be better enjoyed in a one-on-one setting.
