Overall i enjoyed it but it DRAGGED. It was so boring until maybe the last 5th of the book. Still gonna read the next book but this one is definitely not my favorite so far.

I liked this book, although not as much as I liked the previous three (including The Assassin's Blade since I read that b4 TOG). It was slow in the beginning, but about half way through it starts to pick up a little bit, but it still was a bit slow. It was mainly just world & character building, and because it was good in that regard, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series and see what happens with the characters.

This is the 3rd book in the series (4th with AB counted), and it follows Aelin as she is sent to Wendlyn by Chaol for her own safety. She ends up being taken in by Rowan, a Fae prince with a blood oath to Maeve, Aelin's only living Fae relative. Here she learns how to master her power and begins to plot her takedown of the King of Adarlan. Meanwhile we get flashes of Dorian and Chaol and the work they are doing back in Rifthold, where Choal is facing some inner turmoil knowing who Celaena truly is, and Dorian is falling in love with a healer who is helping him learn to control and hide his magical abilities. We also get introduced to Aedion, Aelin's cousin and protector, and Manon, a Blackbeak Ironteeth witch who's race has been recruited by the king to ride Wyverns in his army. Manon is an interesting character because you find yourself rooting for her but also know she is going to be a villian in the future. Through all these viewpoints, we uncover a lot of what the King is planning and how, as well as what the evil powers are that we saw in book 1. The book ends with Aelin showing her power to defeat the evil forces that reveal themselves throughout the book, and a major betrayal for Dorian and Chaol, as Dorian becomes ensalved to his evil father. Great set up for when all these characters will eventually unit.

Overall the pace was medium for me - it took a while to get the juicy bits where stuff happens, but there was a lot of character development. I'm enjoying all the time I get to spend with each character and grow such a strong connection to them.

Going into this book I was curious how Maas was going to handle the three MCs in three different (physical and mental) places. I think she did an okay job with this, especially considering she added in even more characters. (I feel like I need to take notes to keep track of everyone sometimes) I did think it took too long for me to buy into the new characters and sometimes the shifting of pov from one chapter to the next was really unsatisfying.

That being said, I really am invested in these new characters. I am intrigued by the dynamic between Celaena and Rowan. I have a zillion questions that I'm sure are yet to be revealed in the next books in the series. I did feel like Dorian's storyline was a little neglected and when he did get chapters, they felt like fillers. Chaol's storyline was interesting but I found I was more interested in Aedion than Chaol himself. Originally, I HATED Manon, but I'm now obsessed with her and the 13 and mostly ABRAXOS (seriously, my favorite character in the series).

SpoilerI highlighted SO MUCH because I read ACOTAR and CC series first and I'm trying to find all these connections between the worlds. Sometimes I feel like I'm reading too much into something and I'm making connections out of something that isn't even a real connection and that's making me a little crazy. The group chat is probably SICK of my antics too but alas!

Overall, I think the book struggled with cohesion between all the storylines but the world building and characters were interesting enough to overcome that.

It didn't pass my escape test, I found myself a couple times thinking how I would have re-written a line or scene.

Switches POV of characters every other chapter; uses a mix of first and third person
