I read it in the original german and I loved it. This book contains everything, i cannot count how often Mann described a small, human aspect about my life and I found it written out there on the page, a 100 years old. Incredible.

Sure, it is long. If you read it for the plot, you probably will be disappointed. Read it for the language, read it for the journey! It makes you question so much in your own life, if you only give it enough time. This book is a slow burn, you cannot read it fast. Don’t try it in the first place. It will take longer than expected ;)

I've been reading this for a month and now I feel orphaned. This book really *is* everything. Musk & Trump, democracy and its incompetence, the deepest feeling, the most ridiculous thought processes and everything in between. It's all in here and I'm sorry but no, not a single page is boring.

nice idea, in desperate need of an editor. many paragraphs just contain delirious ramblings about the philosophy of nation states or whether liberalism is beneficial to society. those could be interesting points of discussion but they are repeated ad nauseam and not as clear as i would have liked them to be. listen, i am a fan of schachtelsätze (nested sentences) myself but sometimes he really did make them pretentiously long and incomprehensible. i am a slow reader, which didn’t benefit the experience of ploughing through this, it might become more catchy if you consume more of it in longer episodes of reading. i still wouldn’t necessarily recommend it though
