It was slow and some parts, mainly "speeches", of some characters were tedious and hard to follow.
The last chapter though and the image of two soldiers during the battle, who hug each other when the bomb falls on them and then they 'mix and disappear'...
Great long read with no real plot, just time passing until it's gone also. We're following a young guy from the age 24 through to 31. Following for a really long time, though I don't feel like I've got to know him, as he speaks not too much, it's only the narrators, who at some point reveal themselves as 'men'. They show us some random points in time while he's staying in Berghof.
It's a kind of encyclopedic portrayal of Europe right before the WWI, in regards to science, philosophy, psychology, fashion, you name it.
I've enjoyed it and yet I don't feel sad it's over or that I will miss Hans, whom I've barely got to know.
I've read this book because of Tokarczuk's Empuzjon, which is a 'cover' of this book. The influence of Mann on Tokarczuk is felt very clearly, not only in Empuzjon, but her other books. In some chapters, I was confused about the author of the book, it felt very much like Tokarczuk :)
