When The Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy ๐ง
Quotes: "He didn't even feel the need to sneak out the window anymore. The book was his window now."
"God bless social media. It never asks for a warrant.'
"..This is reality. It's her past that's a fantasy."
"You get to a certain age, and they stop calling it scared and call it anxiety. But it's all the same."
"He didn't want to be bad. He just wants to be good. That's all he ever wanted."
"How do you protect?... I don't know."
Review: Jess comes home to her apartment, and outside hiding in the bushes is a crying little boy. She takes him in. Not long after, the boy's father shows up, and something monstrous happens.
Running for their lives, they flee and go from place to place, trying to evade the monster following them. As they run away, Jess has to confront the recent death of her own father. And the realization that's she's much closer to danger than she could ever imagine.
This book is absolutely brutal. Both in carnage and the confrontation of the past.
The first 20 percent of this I was floored by the brutality. (And then later on in the story as well)
As the story flows, you get a good sense of Jess and the Boy. The fear and imagination. Her inexperience with children. Him not understanding the outside world.
Confirmed with the epilogue/afterword,
The story is one about Father's. What role they can form in a child's mind and life. How much their actions and their absence can affect a child and the rippling affect later in life. It's not a story I'll soon forget.
This was my first Nat Cassidy book. There will be more.
Thanks for reading ๐

As always, Natโs afterword is the best part of this novel. Hit me right in the daddy shoes.
