I always seem to get lost in Katie McCoy’s books as the characters and subject matter always seems to just suck me right in. Rascal is no different!
Alex is waiting confirmation that she passed her bar exam to become a lawyer, but in the meantime, has to deal with running into a gorgeous guy while she’s stocking up in the tampon aisle at the grocery store! Talk about embarrassing!
Emerson. What can I say? Swoonworthy, sexy as hell, smart businessman..oh, and Alex’s neighbor. He’s opening a bar with four friends and the man definitely has a chip on his shoulder because of his family, but he won me over almost immediately.
I loved Rascal. It started off so sweet, fun and sexy and did not have any unnecessary drama. The love story between Emerson and Alex was a joy to read! Emerson and Alex just fit so perfectly together, as did the rest of the characters in the story, which will continue with more books!

This was really a very mediocre read for me
3.5*
The first book in the series really played mediocre for me.
The first book in the series really played mediocre for me.
This is the first book I've read from this author and I enjoyed every page of it! It held my attention from the first chapter to the last and now I need the next book in this series..... like now!
Some guys just know how to keep you up all night...
Alex has her head down working hard, aiming to score the associates position at the law firm she's working out. Only thing stopped her is the two other junior associates also vying for the position at the end of summer. So what Alex doesn't need during this already stressful time is to find out that a new bar is being build below her apartment, keeping her up at all hours. The only plus to this situation is the eye-candy that is the five best mates who own and run said bar. In particular, Emerson. When it's made clear that being more family and relationship-orientated could help her land the job, she asks Emerson to be her plus-one to a work event. Emerson's family name and connections seems to please her bosses, but it threatens to tear about any spark that is forming between Alex and Emerson.
Doesn't the cover just catch your eye immediately?
Of course once I read one Katie McCoy book, I just had to check out what else she had written. When I saw that this new series would be released throughout the year, I just had to jump on it and get reading. And this book did not disappoint.
Just the first paragraph of Alex's perspective had me hooked, and I really enjoyed reading from her perspective. She's a serious but fun character who was an interesting person to follow throughout the story. Adding in a few chapters from Emerson's perspective, it was great to get a glimpse into his head during moments of the story. Together, these characters had sexual tension oozing off the page, and you couldn't help but keep reading to see where they go next.
As the start in a companion novel series, I was excited to get an introduction to our other Rascals, and have a guess at who they could be paired up with. The small pieces we got with our future narrators definitely has me intrigued to dive into their stories asap.
The only part of this story that fell flat for me was the complication and drama that resulted. It seemed to have come from nowhere, and while it is believable in retrospect, I felt it needed a little more building up, rather than what felt like a random explosion of emotion that felt a little premature. Regardless, the overall story fits together well.
Contemporary romance fans, I can't not recommend this book to you. I know I say this about pretty much all the romance books I read, but what can I say, I'm a sucker for a cute and swoony romance read, especially one with alternating perspectives and companion sequels.

3.5 Stars
I honestly do not have much to say about this one. It was a cute read without a lot of angst or drama. The writing was great. The pace (for the most part) was good. The plot was humorous and sweet. It had some excellent secondary characters (although, I am not 100% sure I care to read Chase's book as I am a little over the whole "player who sleeps with everything" type of hero). Both of the main characters were very likable, and the ending was a sweet HFN.

My only issue with it was the big drama near the end and how it was resolved. I was annoyed beyond belief that Alex went hunting down Emerson, and beyond annoyed that SHE felt the need to apologize for his a$$hole behavior. She didn't do ANYTHING wrong. Not to mention it took him TWO WEEKS to get his head out of his a$$ and Alex took him back with ZERO grovel after he basically implied she was a whore!! Yea, no, that whole debacle fell short for me which in turn had me lowering my rating. C'est la vie...

Doesn't every romance start with the main characters being trapped in an ATM vestibule? What, just this and Friends? Okay. It's just good luck that Alex is able to find the hottie she was trapped with later. Too bad it's because Emerson and four of his friends are bulding a bar right below her apartment. She gets little sleep as it is while trying to convert her summer position with a law firm into a fulltime job. And it's that job that has her turning to Emerson when she needs a date for her firm's upcoming party.
This sets off a series of dates thatend up with the two in a forever after kind of love.
I wish there had been more to their relationship. And Alex should not have been the ome to apologize. She did nothing wrong during the Big Misunderstanding and yet... there she is. Hiking in to tell Emerson she was wrong.

GOOD. GOD. GET. TO. THE. PLOT. ALREADY. THIS DRAGGED SO DAMN MUCH.
What the hell! This was super sweet! I didn't expect to like this book this much. It didn't have any unnecessary drama and that is ALWAYS very appreciated. The main and secondary characters were amazing. Sometimes at the middle of these books the plot can get dull or boring because it's the part when everything it's in balance but I didn't find that here. Emerson's friends made up for that and Alex's job and ambition helped too! It's not the best book I've ever read but I really enjoyed it. The writing was very enjoyable and I laughed a lot. There was only one little thing that rubbed me the wrong and that was the way the conflict was resolved. It wasn't the worst but it certainly could've been way better than it was. Anyways, I liked this world very much and I can't wait to get to know better the other guys.
