really thought the thing with the sea witch would go in a different direction and unveil a plot like in six crimson cranes y'know

ignoring the fact this whole thing takes place in less than 2 weeks, its so good?? aaaaaaaa

Maisie is a Fae princess of the sea with a kiss of death who has spent the past year hiding from the unseelie queen who wants to recruit her to her team of assassins. When she is found and forced into making a bargain with the queen, she will either have to use her kiss of death on the queen's choice of victim or else give up her own life in 10 days time. As she gets closer to her target Maisie is given more and more opportunities to go through with her plan; however, she becomes less and less inclined to do so.

I bought this book because I saw it on Instagram and thought it was very pretty and I'm very glad that I did. It was described as a "Little Mermaid" retelling and there were little aspects of that included such as Maisie's love for treasure, her faithful crustacean companion and the sea witch; however, it was a very different story. I really enjoyed the setting of Faerwyvae and the Lunar court where the story took place. It had a fun old timey vibe to it. I also liked the Fae lore that this book shares with with some of my other favorite series (e.g., ACOTAR, Cruel Prince).

I really loved Maisie's character. The book was written in 1st person which seemed strange to me at first but I got used to it fast and it really helped me in bonding with her character. There was great chemistry between Maisie and Dorian and there was a nice build up in their relationship throughout the story.

This was actually the third book in the series but all of the novels are stand alone and there were only small references to characters from the other books. I got very sucked into this book and I can't wait to return to Faerwyvae and see how the author spins the other stories.

This book in the series is a little mermaid retelling and it is absolutely wonderful. So in this book Maisie (yes that Maisie from the last book!!) saves a man from a shipwreck. However, her mother who is also a queen wanted him dead and, thus, now it is Maisie's task to get him killed. But ofcourse love gets in the way.

Every book in this serie that I have read thus far was absolutely wonderful and this book is not different. I am absolutely obsessed and I especially loved how characters from both previous but also apparentally from future books are incorporated in this book. I really needed this closure for Maisie. And can we not forget that we also got another small part on Ember and prince Franco!!! The plot of these books always are on the slower side but that is definitely not a bad thing for these books. Even though you can always guess what the storyline will be, this book grips you and I will eat it up. I cannot wait to read the next few books in this series and I might even reread these and fully annotate them because I am in love.

5/5 Stars

I have loved all of the previous books in the Entangled with Fae series but I think this might be my favorite. I loved the Selection elements this book had but it didn’t feel like it was copying anything from those books, and it took those elements and made them it’s own. This book was amazing. I loved our main characters Princess Maise and Dorian Ariko, and adored how their relationship progresses throughout the book.

While the book is high fantasy, it’s a pretty easy read and is fast paced without feeling super rushed. It’s a Little Mermaid retelling, where Ariel instead of losing her voice and having to kiss Eric in 3 days or belong to Ursula forever, she instead has a deadly kiss and has 10 days to kiss him and murder him or she dies instead. I loved the twist with the kiss being deadly as it makes it hard to see how this book will end in it’s promised Happily Ever After but not knowing how it gets there makes it such a fun read.

This book is New Adult with a tiny splash of spice, a slow burn romance that keeps teasing for a while, a mystical high fantasy world with a variety of fae, and wonderful side characters that you root for just as much as the main characters.

I highly recommend this book if you are looking for an I have to kill you enemies to lovers, in a high fantasy setting, with a slow burn romance that is a stand alone book. There are more books in the series if you enjoy this one with more on the way, I loved the hints at future and past books in the series and those easter eggs were fun to find.

Very minor spoilers below :

Spoiler Maise, who is a Princess of the Seelie Sea Court, is on the run from the Unseelie Queen of the Sea court and has landed in the Lunar Court city of Lumenas, a thriving city and the perfect place to disappear from people. We see Maise start the book by stealing objects, which we later learn is how she is able to live at a theater. Maise is morally questionable at times and normally is steered back onto the right path by her best friend/adopted brother Podaxis, who is a crab like faerie and the Sebastian character. Maise is on the run after she accidentally kissed a boy and killed him, but not because she killed a boy but because the Unseelie Queen of the Sea Court is after her. Throughout the book, we see Maise grow as she starts trying to figure out how she can eventually cope with having to kill the man she had saved from a shipwreck after she is forced into a Bargain with the Unseelie Queen of the Sea Court that requires her to kiss and kill Dorian, the man she saved, within 10 days or she herself dies. Maise throughout the book keeps telling herself not to let her heart get involved especially after she has to enter a bridal competition that ends with someone marrying the man she has to kill. By the end, we see Maise accept the dark side that she can’t get rid of and only live with.

Dorian, the son of a fae killer and supposed fae killer himself, gets saved after his ship is attacked and set on fire. He doesn’t remember who saved him, but knowing what relies on him becoming safe in the Faerwyvae Isle, he makes an agreement with the Church of Saint Lazaro, one that's notorious for their rebellion against the fae, to save himself and grant him citizenship within the Isle. This agreement includes being the subject of a bridal competition, in which only those with fae parentage are allowed to enter. Dorian starts off as a relatively stiff and grumpy character but as the book progresses we get to see why this is and he starts becoming more of a person. By the end, we see Dorian accept his past but move forward in a way that allows him to be happy and achieve his duty he felt he had to achieve.
