It takes a while for this book to properly pick up, but I absolutely loved the ending. Ross is a fun mc, I loved getting to read about her, and the family drama in this book jesus christ. While I was pretty frustrated with what felt like her lack of agency here - it constantly felt like the novel was happening to her, and I couldn't help comparing this to Portrait of a Thief, which I never really felt had that problem. I still enjoyed reading, though, and I loved the broader cast Lewis gave us - she has a real gift for distinctive side characters. And although I'm particularly susceptible to feeling that a romance sideplot is annoying and unnecessary, I really didn't mind it here - it never felt like it was pulling away from the narrative in a destructive way.
This book also featured a conclusion that rested with blowing up the system, which is a YA Thriller subgenre I've found myself really enjoying.
Another subgenre I really enjoy: Maybe the real wish was the friends we made along the way

It’s 100% my fault for not paying attention that this book is part of a potential series/duet/something and it ends in a cliffhanger and now I need book #2 asap and no one can help me.
.
Think Ocean’s Eleven, Six of Crows and The Hunger Games, but make it less violent and YA. Even so, it felt very original and writing is snappy, funny and just so easy to read - I read it in 1 sitting, but you already know the way I inhale these books.
.
Rosalyn Quest comes from a well known family in the underground world of thieves and when her plans go south and her mother is kidnapped, she joins a competition that has a very appealing prize - one wish. Thinking she can rescue her mother, she does everything to reach the end of the game, including forming alliances and trusting others around her, which is definitely outside Ross’s comfort zone. But then of course something happens and things take a wild turn and now I need the 2nd book, thanks.

I had not really heard much about Thieves’ Gambit by Kavion Lewis when I received an ARC. Going in blindly, I wasn’t sure what to expect but wow!! The characters are extremely well written, especially our main character Ross Quest. There is mystery, suspense, & more than enough to keep you hooked. This one is a true page-turner. I will definitely check out other works by this author.

Thank you NetGalley &Penguin Group for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

i miss the person that i was when i was reading this book, mostly because past me was blissfully unaware that her flight to DC was going to be canceled a few minutes after finishing this book, leading to one of the most stressful sleep-deprived mornings of my year so far, which is truly saying something if you know me

anyways, back to the book itself! fun and very fast-paced (maybe a bit too fast-paced). i am not big into heist media so i can’t speak to realism but i loved reading about the intense challenges here (and it still felt way more realistic than something like portrait of a thief). the twists were also pretty cool and i didn’t see some of them coming, though again, sleep deprivation disclaimer. the main romance was a little too heterosexual love at first sight for my tastes, and definitely had me rolling my eyes. i think this book could’ve been truly elite if ross and noelia were gay because all the ingredients for good angsty juicy tension were there, but that’s just me. i also wish we got to explore the side characters more, but given the plot, i see why that would’ve been difficult. but like i wanna know more about taiyo and i hope he reappears in book 2. king. overall, i had a fun time and it went by super quickly! unlike this massive fucking line for the frontier customer service that i’ve been stuck in for an hour and a half and there are still hundreds of people in front of me. sorry i’m just so annoyed rn RAHHHH
