Thank you to PRH Audio for the free audiobook!

Thieves’ Gambit is a fun book full of mystery and heists. Ross Quest is a teenager and master thief. Her family is legendary in the heist world, but she wants more and has a plan to run away. Unfortunately, her plans are thwarted when a heist goes wrong, and her mothers life is in danger. Ross desperately enters the Thieves’ Gambit, a heist competition that provides one wish to the winner.

This book was action packed and had me hooked from the very beginning. I loved the concept of the Thieves’ Gambit and all of the heists. The characters were fantastic, and I especially loved Ross for her strength, quick thinking, and bravery. There were so many plot twists and betrayals and I was on my toes the entire time. I was also totally rooting for the enemies to lovers romance. The plot twist at the end totally shocked me!

The audio was really well done with different voices for each character. I thought the narrator was able to really convey all of the emotions in the story. The narration was clear and easy to understand, even sped up.

uhm... what the fuck??
Ja ok, ich hätte weder Hunger Games-like episches Battle Royale last one standing, noch Kaz Brekker-like geniale Pläne erwarten dürfen, aber DIESES ENDE.

It was fine. Definitely won’t be reading the next book.

DID NOT FINISH: 36%

I picked up this book to try something new for me genre-wise. Unfortunately, it wasn't a match. The book itself isn't really bad, but the plot feels a bit predictable and the characters are not my cup of tea either.

Friends. Enemies. Thieves. Cons.

Like a mystery and suspenseful book that will keep you on your toes? This is the book you want. It was a quick and easy read. Very YA with YA themes. Nothing more than a kiss with hidden romance. Acceptable for younger children as well. Similar to the Inheritance Games but still unique in its own right. A refreshing book not set in the US and from the point of view of a Caribbean Island girl. Characters of all different races and backgrounds. LOVED the diversity.

Of course there's a cliff hanger! I'm ready for the next book before this one has even been published.

I wish I had enjoyed this. It had so many elements that could have made it great, but for some reason the story felt almost formulaic and lacking in depth. I have the sequel and I will read it at some point in the hope that the somewhat promising ending of Thieves' Gambit provides Heist Royale with something.

UPDATED 30/01:

I have the second book in this series on my shelf, so I figured that I should probably make the effort to read this one as it had been on the shelf for a year (almost to the day).

I am reviewing this almost a month after I finished it and though I hate saying it, the book, characters and events were rather forgettable. Was it badly written? No, not at all. However, nothing about it made me truly care about anyone, to the point that while there are some moments that I sort of recall as being fraught, nothing stands out as being significant.

I ended up picking this as part of my 25 for 2025 after I decided to buy the sequel (or I couldn't really justify the purchase), and I am glad I did finally read it. Sadly, though, it wasn't anything massively memorable. Fingers crossed the second book is more so (though it looks as though it's pretty short).

I really wanted to like this but it just fell kind of flat for me. It was a little hard to follow bc of how many characters were introduced at once and the author used way too much “teen slang” as if she thought that’s how people young people talk but didn’t actually dig into it that hard to see if she was using it right.

Overall, it was entertaining enough, and I’d recommend it to anyone who’s into books or movies that require you to suspend your disbelief a little in order to appreciate the full experience.

Had a great time. I loooove a heist.
