I finally gave this popular Hades and Persephone retelling a try, and honestly, it was a huge disappointment. It promises a fresh, modern take on the myth, but instead it’s basically a cliche billionaire romance with Greek god costumes.
Persephone was infuriating. She made one stupid decision after another, seemed clueless about everything, and felt like she existed only to move the plot along. I couldn’t connect with her at all.
The relationship between Hades and Persephone felt completely forced. One game of Rock Paper Scissors and a few explicit scenes are supposed to make us believe they’re a “ship-worthy” couple? No way.
The writing didn’t help. Explanations were choppy, characters were underdeveloped, and everything was seen only through Persephone’s perspective. Hades had potential, but we never got to experience him fully. A version from his point of view would have been much more engaging.
The third-act breakup leaned on a trope I can’t stand and just cemented my disappointment. Overall, this felt like an underdeveloped, unedited Greek mythology smut mashup — imagine the worst parts of Fifty Shades and Lore Olympus combined.
Why it didn’t work for me
• Insta-love
• Cringey dialogue
• Dry or nonexistent plot
• Bad writing
• Flat, one-dimensional characters
• Plot-driven mistakes by Persephone
This was a miss on every level, and I still don’t understand how it got published.
