I really wanted to like this book, but it never really hooked me. It got incredibly repetitive after a while and it was tough to get to the ending, which I didn’t find satisfying. Lots of loose ends were tied up, but the payoff wasn’t as big as I had hoped. This book is also LONG. I was committed to finishing, so I did, but it could have trimmed a lot of extraneous and repetitive description.
This book was also advertised to me on the author’s instagram account as inspired by characters from Avatar the Last Airbender, a show I LOVE. I usually don’t have issues with books taking character inspiration from other media. However, I found the similarities and references in this book to be too obvious and rampant in part one, only to disappear completely by part 2. The author never found the sweet spot of integrating inspiration  and original work.

at first i thought it was interesting so i kept reading, but i honestly couldn’t really get into it and care?
near the end i was lowkey over it, and just wanted to finish
i couldnt fall in love with the cast and the pacing was off to me
the first three parts were slow imo and like everything happened at the end of the book
theres also a huge lack of information on the witches, we only really know about the main character Ranka, and her blood magic, i wouldve loved to hear just more about the different covens and what witches do/their past
i also wasnt expect the amount of description for the violence, it was surprising when the first description came up about the first witch Ranka saw while traveling
i wish we had gone more in depth about some characters like Foldrey, and more on Ongrum too
i also felt like some “plot twists” were expected, and if they werent, just underwhelming because i couldnt really care about the situation in the book

I had to claw my way through this book for the first half. I enjoy the idea but it is not written very well.
At one point a character said that the place he was from was made from stone and then in the next line he said that it burned down...
