Can’t rate since dnf. Didn’t get the racism vibes that many people are seemingly swarming about, that surprised me when I went to check the reviews after deciding to not finish. The black characters are complex and are not the villains—I stopped at 30-40% and the main character was already proven wrong for directing her anger at them. Anyway what made this a dnf for me personally was the writing style?? You’d have sections of wonderful prose and then the characters would talk in the most modern slang and voice. They’d have back and forths that were the most stereotypical/stilted things like “hey look at me look at this incredibly funny banter between my characters” and it really took me out of it. It was so inconsistent. I also could not get a feel for what kind of technology exists in this world—they know about cells and viruses and stuff, but the aesthetic is more high fantasy.

First off, excellent title!!! Second: wow exactly 0 good (alive) parental figures in this book lol

I had a great time with this! Excellent world building, really inventive. I don’t know that I ever understood EXACTLY what Ranka’s (or any of the other witches’) powers were, but that’s okay. It was fun to read and find out.

Also love that my digital edition had the extra scenes with Percy and Galen!!

Docking a star because Aramis’ motivations in the beginning were so confusing to me and then she did a complete 180 and they were
also in love?? Don’t get me wrong I love them together
but how we got there was very odd to me.

Witches, betrayal, comedy, lesbians??? I’m hooked. This book was such a refresher for me. The plot had multiple twists and turns that were not predictable and the romantic aspect of it wasn’t clear at first. Love a good slow-burn, lowkey enemies to lovers plotline. gayness aside, each character was extremely complex, and the thematics throughout Ranka’s life were really emotional and well thought-out.

Just not for me sadly, think it was a combo of writing style and the story style/pace
