Listen, I love these characters so much. This did feel like a middle book, and the synopsis is a tad misleading, but since I love these characters so much, I still had a great time.

Really enjoyed this one. I’m liking how much this trilogy is very character-focused. There is a plot but it’s very simple and more background (although that might change in the next book when
they go and find a dragon
).

Good continuation of relationships from the last book and from Farseer. Thick and Elliania were interesting new additions and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them. I hope we get some good Elliania stuff when they go to the Out Islands, and I did enjoy the slow build-up of Thick and Dutiful’s relationship. But also what it allowed Fitz to do. I think Fitz is someone who has had to have violence as a first reaction for a long time so I think it was good for him to interact with someone who actually was hostile towards him (and actively a threat to a certain extent) with kindness, realising that this might in fact create a stronger relationship with this figure as a future ally. The Fitz and Beloved relationship
took a turn in this book yikes, but I think it was interesting. I liked how long it took them to reconcile - and I don’t think they have truly reconciled by the end of this book - it felt realistic especially given how big a fight they had and I liked that the book showed Fitz learning from his mistake and slowly changing his worldview.

I liked the little bits of Fitz and Hap that we got, he cares for him a lot. I also like the Fitz and Dutiful teacher-student relationship and am interested to know how this will continue to change
now Dutiful is aware of who Tom Badgerlock really is
. I also liked the reversal almost of Chade and Fitz’s relationship because I think they have a really complicated relationship. There’s a lot of love and memory there but also a lot of pain and anger, especially on Fitz’s part, so it’s fun to see another angle.

We need more prominent women in this series who aren’t love interests to Fitz good lord worst thing that can happen to a woman in these books istg. Definitely the thing I miss most about Liveship. So glad Kettricken was here and it is really really nice to see how much she’s grown over the 15 years since Farseer in terms of her political acumen. Far cry from when Fitz was advising her in Royal Assassin! The stuff with the Bingtown Traders, the Outislanders, and the Old Blood convocation was all very good and I did like her holding her own against Chade! I think Nettle will have a big role to play in the future so I am excited to see more of her actually, especially as she does seem extremely strong in the Skill. Starling and Jinna are both fun though. I did like that Jinna cut off her sexual relationship with Fitz on her own terms because I feel like not a lot of female characters are doing that in these books although I was sad
about the way she reacted after he killed Laudwine and the others
. I’m happy that Starling and Fitz’s relationship is on the mend and that it looks like they might just stay friends because I actually do think she’s a very entertaining character.

I liked the little cameos/mentions of characters we know and love like Jek, and Selden, and Patience (especially Patience because I still miss her :( pls bring her back!!!). The fact
that Chivalry maybe came up with the name tomcat and now Fitz goes by Tom did make my heart twinge a little, and the fact that Patience views him as a son.

Overall another good book from Robin Hobb and I am really enjoying this trilogy so far. I’m very interested and excited to read the next one, especially with the Fool’s statement
about him being the one to die next book
. I’m sure there’ll be some way out of it but it looks like it’ll be a heartbreaking conclusion (as I’m beginning to realise is the way with these books…).
