I read this book awhile ago, and still think about it often. The concept of popularity for currency is intriguing. Whenever I see some stupid attention seeker in the news, I think of this book.

Again, what was the point? Why go on? It lost me. I liked the first 2, but the last 2 can be skipped.

I read the first three books in this series all at once. I thought the series was complete, so I was surprised when this book came out. I just got a copy from the library and have finished it in two days. I liked it a lot.

This book stands on its own. I enjoyed the characters, and the new tech that Westerfeld created, especially the Shuffle House, how cool is that. I enjoyed his commentary on fame and his ideas about a possible future. He points out flaws in todays society in such a way that they seem obvious, but doesn't beat the point into the ground. It's like, "We should take better care of the Earth." Then, move on to the next plot point.

There was only one point where I thought, "No Way!" and was thrown out of my suspension of disbelief. Aliens? Oh, come on! But I read on, hoping there was a good explination.

I would love to read this with a group of middle school kids to see what they thought of it. It's an ideal book for book club and discussion about a wide range of topics.

Reread. A lot more fun than the main trilogy, at the cost of some of the depth. The romance felt pretty flat and entirely unnecessary, though I do appreciate the role Frizz plays and what he adds to the conversation the book is having. I think it is a necessary  addition to the conversation of the trilogy, but it’s very much not connected to the story of the rest of the series.

Second (documented) read: February 2024 -

Okay, when I say I love this series with my WHOLE HEART, I mean it. Like, forreals. I've been reading and rereading this series almost every year since I first discovered it in 2005-2006ish, and it's definitely one of my comfort reads.

As usual, this book is my least favorite in the series, and it might honestly just be because Tally and David don't make a huge appearance in it, and the content of this usually just goes right over my head... but still loved every second of this reread!

First (documented) read: January 2022 -

Not my favorite book of the series, but it was still interesting. This was a reread from one of my favorite series in high school. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again — I’m still waiting for hoverboards to make their way to the real world.

Even as a kid, I could remember all the stories and events that were told in the first three book of the series. But each time that I reread Extras, I could NEVER remember what happens in any of it. Maybe because it’s confusing to me? Or maybe because it’s not centered around Tally, and that made me sad.

Regardless, I am still impressed and amazed by this world Scott Westerfeld has created. It’s like the OG Black Mirror. The language is pretty gag-making and the concept has always been dizzy-making to me, even as a kid, which is probably why I was so drawn to this series many years ago. Sad I completed this series again, but I’ll definitely be revisiting it in the future!

Not my favorite of the series. I didn't like the focus switch from Tally's POV to a newly introduced character. I wouldn't have minded a book from another POV, but I wished it was a character I was more familiar with.

However, it was a fun story, and familiar/much loved setting.
